Living here in the Philippines, I can say that most Philippinos agree with his war on drug dealers. I don’t like everything about him, but he’s definitely taking it to the drug cartels. As far as declaring martial law, I don’t see it right now, just think its part of his rhetoric. If you’re pissing off the UN, obama, and all the liberal do-gooders, then you’re doing something right.

Martial law in certain critical situation is consistent with the rule of law it is part of a country’s law. Sometimes it is called a “state of emergency”.
In the US, it’s actually in the constitution...

what is different is that Duterte got a lot of the low level dealer and some of the Chinese drug manufacturers here and the next step is the mayors and soon the higher politicians.
It may be the only way to get justice when bribery and killing witnesses keep you out of jail.
our nephew was killed by a former mayor here, and 10 years later he recently died in his bed due to bribes etc.
