China hits back at Trump, says one-China policy is 'non-negotiable'

China said Sunday that its one-China policy is “non-negotiable” after President-elect Donald Trump suggested that he might use American policy on Taiwan as a bargaining chip between the two sides.

China Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang reiterated in a statement that the “government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing China.”

"That is the fact acknowledged by the international community and no one can change,” Lu added.

Since recognizing Beijing in 1979, Washington has maintained only unofficial ties with Taiwan, the self-governing island that Beijing considers its territory — a status quo that Trump has repeatedly threatened to upend since winning the November election.

Trump told The Wall Street Journal on Friday that “everything is under negotiation, including ‘one China.’” The interview is the latest indication Trump that he will shake up the U.S.-China relationship, particularly on Taiwan, which China considers a core national interest.

China had already been rattled over Trump’s call with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, the first time an American president or president-elect had publicly spoken to Taiwan’s leader in nearly four decades.

OK, let’s agree to disagree and anytime you try to make this a precondition of any agreement, the answer is automatically “No”.

China is basically taking the statements from the Trump people about Israel/Palestine and throwing it right in their face over the situation in China/Taiwan.

“...they are up against a negotiator that they know will fight back”

The Chinese have always negotiated for the betterment of China. Americans have often negotiated for the betterment of something other than America.

The Chinese negotiator who made the 100 year lease deal for Hong Kong was treated as a hero. He negotiated an eventual win from a weak position. The Chinese and the Japanese take the long view. Americans can only think as far ahead as the next election.

There's another angle to that ...

When a country trades extensively with the U.S. and develops a large trade surplus with us, they end up with a lot of U.S. dollars that eventually make their way back to the U.S. in the form of currency exchanges and capital investments. So China buys U.S. government bonds, U.S. companies, and U.S. real estate.

They also buy one of the best investments a foreign buyer can ever make in the U.S. They buy U.S. politicians. And the reason this is such a great investment is that U.S. politicians typically sell out very cheap.

Is Red China prepared to go to economic war and military conflict over Taiwan?

I doubt it.

Good. There is no reason for President Trump to negotiate about it. Just ignore their tantrum, and the Chinese will grow up once they see that throwing a fit doesn’t work.

America has adhered to the six assurances since Ronald Reagan enacted them in 1982. this was never questioned until Barack Obama came along. In 2016, the Republic congress reconfirmed our commitment to the six assurances. Shortly thereafter in 2016, Republican commitment to the the six assurances were incorporated into the official Republican party platform. This has never been done before.

The sixth assurance specifically states that the US does not officially recognize Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan.
