It has been my (admittedly limited) experience that, once a police officer thinks that you are guilty of something, there is nothing you can say or do to change his or her mind. Even when a judge has vindicated you, you will still be guilty in the mind of the arresting officer.

I knew a girl in college in Chicago whose father was a Chicago cop.

He saw a black guy trying to break into a Porsche with a coat hanger, and approaches. The guy said it was his car.

The cop’s response after seeing the driver’s license? “My Apologies, Mr. Payton.” True story. No rough stuff needed.

I don’t disagree.

If you think about it, once we form opinions, most of us are pretty hard to flip.

You can see it here in those who supported Trump or someone else.

You will have to realize also that officers many times are privy to a lot more information than is let into court. Many times they know without a shadow of a doubt the guy is guilty, and yet the jury never will.

In this instance, that doesn’t seem to be the case. They really do need to leave room for innocence.

“Wow. kind of a low bar don’t you think?”

Really, I don’t think so. I’ve been pulled over more times than I can count, and simply staying in the car seemed the obvious thing to do.

“How is one to know what the police in question ‘prefer’?”

If you stay in the car, with your hands visible, you are in a position to wait for the police to tell you what they prefer. Exiting your car before they even get out of theirs is a recipe for chaos.

“Pretty lame excuse for their behavior IMO”

I’m not excusing their behavior. Consider it a public service announcement. If I go into an alley at night and get mugged, I still blame the muggers - but in the future I would advise people not to go down alleys at night. Similarly, no matter how despicable the police actions, I would still advise that staying seated in the car would be a preventative measure.

Pretty lame excuse for their behavior IMO. They should treat those they interact with with respect until there is a reason not to.
