The private sector doesn't take the day off.
Really? All of it? Then why is was my local appliance parts store closed today - and my barbershop too?

I did not say it wasn't a holiday. It is for banks and government. Since when are banks not in the Private Sector?

Monday is only a holiday for banks and government. Private businesses have never observed MLK Day as a holiday. That's funny, the last two PRIVATE SECTOR employers I worked for (and my current one..) have given Martin Luther King day off as a paid holiday.
I can name them if you want.
