We were in Panama, and a group of people captured with some of the Panama Defense Force were decreed safe to let go.
One of our SSGs took out a knife to cut the plastic cuffs that had one prisoner’s hands secured behind his back. He swiped up with his knife through the plastic cable...and you guessed it...stabbed himself in the head. He went to the hospital, got stitched up, and was lying there asleep when some dignitary walked through dropping Purple Hearts on the beds of all the guys in the hospital.
He attempted to get it off his record. He was an honorable guy. I left that assignment never knowing what finally came of it.
Like you say, most real warriors will insist the heroes are the guys who didn’t make it back. But they’re just being modest, maybe feeling guilty for making it out alive when the guy next to them fell.
Nothing modest about these suits patting one another on the back and trading medals for extraordinary excellence in the pursuit of their political agenda.
