Commanding general of D.C. National Guard to be removed from post (at 12:01 pm Jan 20th)
WaPo ^ | Peter Hermann

Posted on 01/13/2017 9:30:14 AM PST by RoosterRedux

The head of the D.C. National Guard, Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, said Friday that he has been ordered removed from his command effective Jan. 20, 12:01 p.m., just as Donald Trump is sworn in as president.

Schwartz’s forced departure will come in the midst of the presidential inauguration that he has spent months helping plan alongside D.C. police, the U.S. Secret Service and other top District officials. He will turn over command to an interim as power transfers from one president to the next, and just before the inaugural parade marches down Pennsylvania Avenue.

“The timing is extremely unusual,” Schwartz said in an interview Friday morning, confirming a memo announcing his ouster that was obtained by The Washington Post. During the inauguration, Schwartz would command not only the members of the D.C. guard but also an additional 5,000 troops sent in from across the country to help. He also would oversee military air support protecting the nation’s capital during the inauguration.

“My troops will be on the street,” Schwartz, 65, said. “I’ll see them off but I won’t be able to welcome them back to the armory.” He said that he would “never plan to leave a mission in the middle of a battle.”

Schwartz said he would oversee duties in a command center and then depart at 12:01 p.m., retiring from the Army.

what is the purpose for this at the last hour?

Not 12:01 AM.

Effective 12:01 PM, January 20th.

Regardless the timing of the oath-taking ceremony, Donald John Trump is President of the United States of America at 12 Noon and Barry Soetoro is not.

The Trump Administration is relieving the Commander of his duties officially at that time. Just giving him a heads-up.

From the article:

"Unlike in states, where the governor appoints the National Guard commander, in the District that duty falls to the president. Schwartz said that he has not been told why he was asked to step down. “I’m a soldier,” he said, noting that he was following orders and has no regrets. “I’m a presidential appointee, therefore the president has the power to remove me.”

He was removed by Obama, and doesn't know why. This sounds like something out of the film "JFK." We are facing what will unarguably be the most contentious inauguration of the last hundred years, and one of the main security officials is being removed right in the middle of it.

There is major civil unrest in DC being planned for inauguration day. The DC National Guard is the only one that falls directly under the President. For some reason on that day, Trump does not trust this guy to do his job for some reason.

No idea what that could be.

Was this guy playing an integral role in protecting Trump during the inauguration? If not, ### him.

He was in charge of the military part of the Inaugural security and preparations. On the other hand, he is a presidential appointment and all of Obama's appointees have been told that they were out as of noon on January 20th. This is probably just part of that.

Wrong. He was removed by Obama. Trump currently has no authority to do this, and he cannot issue orders in advance.

Trump can’t end his post yet can he?

As of noon on January 20th he can. And the general's appointment ends at 12:01.

This must have been ordered by the Trump transition team, since it will take effect the minute he is declared President. My guess is that they want to make sure the multiple threats to the Inaugural parade that have been published all over the Internet will be taken care of in Trump’s favor. The transition team must have had meetings and they possibly determined they could not trust the former leadership.

Then something major is up with this guy and that is a scary thought foe inauguration day.

He's an Obama appointee. The incoming administration has made it clear that all Obama appointees are out as of noon on January 20th. So why the surprise?

Thanks Doodle, I for some reason thought Trump couldn’t even fancy making exec decisions legally until sworn in.

I don’t know where I got that from.

Sometimes I get cobwebs in the head, so I’ll take your word for it.

Who ordered this?

From the article:

"Unlike in states, where the governor appoints the National Guard commander, in the District that duty falls to the president."

So, there you have it. And 'strange' doesn't exactly describe it.

Wrong. He was removed by Obama.

If you're positive.

I don't think so.

yeah, I reckon.

it just amazes me (and in a good way) that the Trump team is on to every last detail of everything.

I’m so used to slogging through bureaucratic do nothings that can’t walk and chew gum, then comes along Trump and there is attention to every detail.

I hope you are right, and I presume you are.

Thanks Albion.

Isn’t D.C. under the control of Congress? Did Obama order this? .

According to the article the commander of the D.C. National Guard is a presidential appointee. All of Obama appointees have been told by the incoming administration that they are out of office at noon on the 20th.

Trump can’t issue orders until his left hand leaves the Bible.

Trump is president at the stroke of noon on January 20th, regardless of whether he's completed the oath or not.

But he can send a memo giving a heads up on orders already written which will become effective immediately upon transfer of power.
