Dangerous, potentially destructive ice storm looms for 1,000-mile swath of central US

People from Texas to Ohio are bracing for a dangerous long-duration ice storm that could turn destructive and cut power to hundreds of thousands from Friday to Sunday.

A shallow layer of cold air in the atmosphere will accompany a storm over the central United States. The storm will produce a swath of freezing rain along a 1,000-mile swath.

As the chilled rain falls on cold surfaces, it will freeze into a thin glaze of ice at first. The transparent and slippery nature of the ice will be a great hazard for motorists and pedestrians.

Got a 5 kw from Lowe’s the first time a Hurricane knocked out power for 48 hours.

Snow, Ice or Hurricane if the power goes out I’ll crank it up. It will run the Frig, TV center, my work station and either a window A/C unit or floor oil heater.

Plus with all the camping gear - and food - in the garage we have cooking and lights covered also.

Yes, purge the old fuel and refill your cans with non ethanol premium. Add a dash of Sta-bil when you fill your cans.

It’s -25f with a -45f wind chill outside my humble home this morning here in N.MN!

The cold just builds character and makes you appreciate Spring when it finally shows up!

From a southerner having much experience with ice storms, make sure you’re OK to be without power for at least a few days. If you’re not, be somewhere that you will be OK.

No point even trying to drive on something that you can’t even walk upon.

As far as damage, that comes with accumulations above 1/4” of ice. Over 1/2” will make quite a mess and severe damage is possible. Trees near your house will become something to fear. You’ll hear them groaning, popping and crashing all night, possibly into your house. Possibly through your house.

Good luck and be safe.

You’re fortunate you didn’t experience a flash freeze on the road. It happens sometimes. One minute, just wet, maybe a few icicles on the mirrors or something, then boom all heck breaks loose.

Hey it’s not always safe where it’s warm either. My neighbor slipped and fell while spraying off her pool area. Required 2 shoulder surgeries. One on each shoulder.
Hope your arm gets better.

Interesting. The article mentions Texas, yet my local (N.Texas) weather app shows 50°-60° through the weekend.

We prepare for this by spending the winter in Florida, where the weather is gorgeous.

Righto on the well. Us too. Even with the generator, one eventually runs out of gas, so, I’ve been thinking about getting an auxiliary hand pump for really dire circumstances...

During the worst of it, my / our priorities were, after staying warm, intermittent power to: the well (and keeping the wellhouse from freezing up / breaking pipes), to the freezer, and to the sump pump.

That 2009 storm is rated by The Weather Channel as the 3rd worst in US history.

https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/top-10-worst-ice-storms-20131205?page=8

And I have pics that make most of the ones NWS has posted look “weak”:

http://www.weather.gov/media/pah/Top10Events/2009/Ice%20Storm%20Jan%2026-28%202009.pdf

Thankfully, as of this morning, some NWS offices seem to be backing off slightly on predicted ice accumulations, this go-round...

This thing is headed my way Sunday and Monday. I live in a newer subdivision but I am still worried about the power going out. I am heading to purchase a battery pack for my cpap machine after work today. I also have a solar generator coming that I ordered from Amazon. Unfortunately they couldnt get it to me until Monday so it will likely be in a FedEx truck in a ditch somewhere until after I need it. Thankfully Monday is a holiday so neither me or the mrs. will need to venture out then.

I have over 30 trees killed by ash borers.

Not many near the house though.

Not many killed by ash borers near the house, or not many trees at all near the house? Trees don’t need to be diseased or dead to come down in an ice storm, is the reason that I ask.

http://weather.blogs.foxnews.com/2017/01/13/a-major-ice-storm-on-the-way-for-the-central-u-s/

Here’s what Janice Dean has to say about the storm. In terms of specific amounts, it’s hard to gauge since freezing rain is determined by multiple factors in the atmosphere.
