Did the poster make a big & stupid mistake by not verifying the identity of the person? Yes. But let's not make this some racial thing.
A quibble: This week I learned from Buzzfeed that in a case where the presenter of the information didn't bother to verify his facts, "Americans can make up their own minds". :-)
