I prefer to see snow on postcards only.

I do not miss California and I don’t hold any great love for the Sacramento Police Department or the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department. But I will say that even when the latter two agencies were mindlessly mucking around in my life the CHP officers I ran into were consistently courteous, thoughtful, concerned about my well-being, and professional to a fault.

Do the servers bring out a special menu for your party?

I always thought that the pass was where Santa goes for a Christmas BBQ after working all the previous day.

Impressive driving by the FedEx driver ... especially pulling two trailers.

I-80 between Truckee and Reno is no picknick, even in the summer. It’s the steepest and most dangerous section, IMO. Lanes are narrower, road is rough in sections and tighter corners than west of Truckee.

I saw a freeze happen there about 20 years ago. Vehicles coming over from Truckee were on hard pack snow but around Glenshire, right where this video is the road became shear ice. Once a vehicle began sliding there was no way to stop. Some cars and trucks hit each other and kept sliding in clumps, four, five, or more together until the first one hit something and they would crash and come apart.

Some would stick against the guard rail or center median, but then others sliding down would hit them and start another clump. It was total chaos and devastation for the people who drove past the airport turn off before CHP could close the road.

That’s what I was thinking. That FedEx driver deserves his/her choice of a medal or a stiff drink after safely pulling that one off.

I’ve had to drive like a slow motion drifter before going up a pass in snow, allowing the rear to slide out following the bank of the roadbed, but I’ve never had to do that going down a pass. I’m sure the driver had a sore jaw from clenching his teeth and a tension headache that just wouldn’t quit after getting off that mountain.

Great job by the Truckee CHP and the driver.

I was just on that pass two weeks ago; not a snowflake in sight.

No kidding. I’m pretty sure you’d have to pry my hands loose from the steering wheel afterward. I’d have serious white knuckle syndrome! On the other hand, it would be VERY good for my prayer life!

In tense, low traction situations like that, it seems as if the vehicle speeds up whenever it slips. Worst experience I’ve ever had was being stuck in endless traffic during a bad ice storm on I-40 in North Carolina. Four hours to get home, stop and go the entire way, just waiting for my car to skid and crash into something or someone, or someone else doing the same to me. It made me physically ill.

I agree it was “impressive” but also stupid. The dispatcher sending doubles over Donner this week: Stupid. The driver not chained properly: Stupid. The driver not off the road until cleared: Stupid.

This driver could have killed many other people trying to “make time.”

I have been over that pass a half dozen times and some in weather like this with good alpine tires and four wheel drive. It is not for gaming.

Would appreciate an interpretation of what the CHP officer requested from the Truckee CHP headquarters. I could hear the request but don’t know what it meant.

Sometimes, you’re just caught flat-footed by bad weather on the road. I know I’ve been. Don’t know that that’s the case here, but I wouldn’t be so quick to call him stupid.
