Most likely to see if investing dollars into the R&D of alternate fuel sources made sense. Also to have means of countering false claims. Exxon is and was under no obligation to justify research done and actions based on that research. Unless such research divulged a product was causing direct harm to persons and steps were not taken to inform people or prevent further damage. Such as “Hey we found out chemical “a” is present in 20 times the amount GRAS and severe birth defects are caused by this” The judge is way out of line.

On the basis of which legal theories does this stand?

Massachusetts judge:

"We don't need no stinkin' legal theories."

(This is Massachusetts we're talking about, after all)"

Feds need to intervene in Massachusetts. It’s getting a little too big for its britches, violating civil rights under color of law.

So, they’re saying EXXON was lying to say that there is no warming, while the other grant-fueled pseudo-scientists were lying to say it was? Oh, wait- wasn’t it a new ice age they were trying to promote/deny back then?

“Political payback. Once Trump is in office, his AG should start demanding Universities turn over 40 years of THEIR “research” on global warming!!!”

From 2010 to 2012 then Virginia Attorney General Cuccinelli attempted to obtain climate change research from the University of Virginia (a state University) as part of his investigation of a climate scientist who worked for the university and was therefore a state employee. The Virginia Supreme Court halted the state attorney general’s investigation of the scientist.

The Washington Post editorial below speaks to the freedom of scientists to conduct research without political pressure. Perhaps the newspaper should dust off its 2012 opinion and speak out in support of the freedom of scientists at Exxon.
