in the 1950s and 1960s

in the 50's a movie called the Wild One with Marlon Brando opened up a whole new wardrobe choice for school kids. Boots and motorcycle jackets were the rage.

I remember. After WW2, kids started wearing jeans, flannel shirts, t-shirts, saddle shoes and bobby sox. But there was still almost a separate class for married people. Men and women dressed well to leave the house and go in public. Women still wore dresses, hats and gloves on Sunday or for any important occasion, even for going shopping downtown. Men wore suits and overcoats with fedoras. Both genders wore gloves, except in the summer, when men did not, but women still did except at the seashore. Even to walk the boardwalk in Atlantic City, men and women dressed up in the evening. Noice the guy in front with his sports jacket over his arm. He and his parents probably just went to a nice seafood restaurant for dinner. Tablecloth restaurants required jackets and ties.

Men certainly wore hats but I am a lot more familiar with working mens clothes than Sunday afternoon strollers. I lived in an economically depressed after WW II. The Hat was soon dropped and later revived in the form of caps.

I Joined the National Guard in 1955 and went active Army in 57 where everyone wore hats or caps, no gloves, no dress blues either I guess. That was the year the Army began to switch over to the Green uniform so I received one WW II Ike jacket uniform and one Dress Green. This paragraph has nothing to do with the original post, just me reminiscing.
