Sounds like what Sheldon and Amy did onetime on the Big Bang Theory and measured how fast the rumor spread via social media/Facebook.
The Soviets purpose was to use "Big Media" to discredit their enemies.
4chan's purpose was to use Big Media to discredit Big Media.
Both use the method of chumming the waters with disinformation so that Big Media would pick it up.
They had to have known it was false. They ran with it anyway.
It’s quite interesting to do this. And it always spreads faster than you think. There was no Facebook when I was in college. Gasp, no internet either!

But this is incredible. I believe he made this up, well he, she or they, whoever 4chan is.
And the media fell for it Hook Line & Sinker. Well, Buzzfeed (got off their mailing list today) and CNN.
