What I would bring back is public execution. We need to make an example in public of the fate of those who commit such acts

Well, he has 1 MANDATORY appeal coming, and probably 30 more appeals financed by the ACLU and other Commie Prog organizations. (Yes, MANDATORY— that’s in Federal law.)
He’ll never actually be put to death, but the though is nice.

Exactly why capital punishment has little if any deterrent value. I suspect the vast majority of murderers have no fear whatever of having to actually face the death penalty.

That is a damn good idea. Give the convicted murderer the choice of the bullet to the brain or slow starvation. Should they have access to water? Hmmm . . .
He will be 107 years old by the time the sentence is carried out.
