Georgetown Professor Michael Eric Dyson is proposing the idea that white people should have an ‘Individual Reparations Account’ to make donations to black institutions and individuals.
The idea is part of his forthcoming book, “Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America.”
Dyson made the argument during an interview with Ana Marie Cox in the January 8 edition of the New York Times Magazine.

At the end of your sermon, you do a “benediction” section, in which you talk about making reparations on the local and individual level: donating to groups like the United Negro College Fund or a scholarship program, but also, to cite your example from the book, paying “the black person who cuts your grass double what you might ordinarily pay.” That gave me pause!
Good! I used to say in church, “If the sermon ain’t making you a little bit uncomfortable, it ain’t effective.” Look, if it doesn’t cost you anything, you’re not really engaging in change; you’re engaging in convenience. You’re engaged in the overflow. I’m asking you to do stuff you wouldn’t ordinarily do. I’m asking you to think more seriously and strategically about why you possess what you possess.
I agree with reparations, but maybe this is my white privilege speaking: I can’t imagine actually doing that.
That is what I meant by an I.R.A.: an individual reparations account. You ain’t got to ask the government, you don’t have to ask your local politician — this is what you, an individual, conscientious, “woke” citizen can do.
But charity can’t be the end of it, right? The Koch brothers gave the United Negro College Fund $25 million, but I doubt you would consider them “woke.”

I have several ancestors on both sides of my family that owned slaves and fought for the Confederacy. That being said, I don’t owe these buffoons Jack sh!t.

This nonsense needs to be countered with some facts, namely, that slavery is going on all over the world today. And guess what? Blacks buy, sell, and own black slaves.
Also, while it’s true early Americans purchased slaves, it was the blacks that sold them off. It’s not like they were playing volleyball on the beach and Americans kidnapped them into slavery.
Finally, many whites did not own slaves. Many whites fought and were killed or maimed to free them.
Stop allowing people like this POS to lie and fan the flames of racial discontent.
My great great grandfather and two uncles of that same generation did my family’s bit on Marye’s Heights in Fredericksburg with the 69th NYV. I don’t have any letters of thanks from the NAACP in my family artifacts. Maybe when they write one I will consider a donation.
This is extortion. No white person alive ever owned a slave. No black person alive was ever a slave. If this dufus wants to burn his own money, let him. He will need to keep his hands out of my pocketbook. I work too hard for what I have to give it away to those too lazy to get up and work as well.
Same here. Both sides of my family came to America decades after the Civil War. This professor is simply a racist. To him, being White is to be a former slave owner.

My ancestors were Slavs - the root of our word slave. I probably have more slave blood in me than any African American. My grandparents all came to this country legally through Ellis Island with nothing except a will to a better life - so we never owned anyone. This “professor” ought to be paying me for the privilege of adding no value while making a comfortable living.
