Australia has a serious cat problem, with feral cats covering 99.8% of the country according to new research published in the journal Biological Conservation.
The exact number of cats fluctuates from roughly 1.4 million after continent-wide droughts cramp food sources to about 5.6 million after extensive wet periods, which result in plenty of available prey. An additional 700,000 feral cats are estimated to live in other environments, including Australias urban areas, rubbish dumps and intensive farms.
Despite this, researchers say that the cats impact on Australias fauna is still severe, and that reducing this impact is of critical importance. The BBC reports that since 1788, about 11% of the countrys 273 native mammals have gone extinct, with a major factor being introduction of the predatory red fox and feral cat from Europe.

Nature will find a way to fix it, likely through disease.

On a positive note, I would assume that the mice are under control.

They went extinct in New Zealand when the Maori killed all the Haast eagle’s prey, the Moa, which were 400 lb+ flightless birds. Maybe the eagles only killed young moa.

We enjoy watching the eagles along the river where we live. Yesterday two eagles were raising a ruckus behind the house as DH was outside "test driving" his new cast iron skillet.
I don't know if they like the smell of bacon or not, but one flew right over his head, over our deck, and landed in a tree about 15 yards away. I was standing on the deck looking him right in the eye. He kept chirping and calling to the other eagle for a few minutes, then off he flew. That's never happened in the 30 years we've lived here.

Wow, really?
About as accurate as saying all cat owners are mentally ill, senile elderly women.

Weve had serious proposals in recent years to introduce elephants to outback Australia to replace our lost megafauna. Makes as much sense as camels in the American south-west. (That is to say, not a whole lot ...)
Youd think wed learn...
There was a time when "rabbits in Australia" was a cautionary tale every American knew.
