A Twin Cities man who was heading on a cruise with his wife told WCCO he witnessed the shootings at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Mark Lea, a financial adviser from Elk River, talked while passengers were still on lockdown at the airport after police had taken the gunman into custody. He was in the baggage claim area when shots broke out. The latest reports from authorities in Florida say five people were killed and eight others were hurt in the baggage claim area at the Fort Lauderdale Airport. Lea said that the attack was an awful and surreal experience.
“It sounded at first like firecrackers, and then we figured out what actually was going on. There was actually a shooter,” Lea told WCCO. “People started yelling and screaming running for any exit they could.” Lea said the shooter was very quiet as he walked through the baggage claim, emptying what Lea said appeared to be a 9mm weapon.
“He was shooting as though he was walking through the woods and doing target practice, only using people as his target,” he said.
Lea said that he estimated the shooter got within 10 to 15 feet of him.
He said that he offered comfort to a woman who had been shot, and whose husband had been shot as well and wasn’t moving, Lea said.
“She had a pool of blood around her a foot in diameter already, so I didn’t want to move her until EMS could get in there,” he said.
The gunman was identified as Estaban Santiago, and investigators said he went through three magazines.

What kind of gun did he use. The pix looks like a glock...but not quite. The openings on the frame above the trigger opening are typical of glocks.
Looks like a Gen 3 or 4 Glock.
It says he was on the floor comforting a woman who was shot, and the shooter came within 10-15 feet of them. I do not think he was in any way able to do much to stop the carnage.

Yeah, it could have been worse though. He would have been much more effective if he had told everyone to get down and lay on the floor. Compliance rate would of been high.

Sometimes, self preservation for your family would just be the prudent thing to do.
Think of the alternative of trying to stop him: you are on the other side of the column from the shooter. He knows you are there. You can’t exactly see him. He shifts to the right to take a shot. You know he is going to get you if he shoots, so you jump toward him from 10 feet.
He’d have you dead to rights.
Or, you usher your family out the door, leaving someone’s grandmother to suffer the consequences.
I don’t begrudge anyone for making that quick, life or death decision.

I still think this ISIS terrorist had some help from inside the airport.. Ammo placed in restroom trash can or even loaded gun placed inside his luggage. I think a lot of what we’re being told will be found to have been UNTRUE.

That’s not an easy calculation to make in 1.3 seconds when he opens fire.
In Florida, as in a few other states, the unsecured areas of the airport are gun free zones.
