ISIS’ index finger signal is a gesture with the index finger raised up from an otherwise closed hand. For followers of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant it is often used as a sign of their cause.[1]

The gesture is alluding to tawhid, the indivisible oneness concept of monotheism in Islam.[1] All adherents to the Muslim faith believe in tawhid. Thus, many mainstream Muslims believe that ISIL militants have corrupted the meaning of this symbol, which has a history of being used in a non-violent manner throughout the Muslim world.
