Barack Obama’s presidency began with a record number of Americans not in the labor force, and it's ending the same way.

The final jobs report of the Obama presidency, released Friday, shows that the number of Americans not in the labor force has increased by 14,573,000 (18.09 percent) since January 2009, when Obama took office, continuing a long-term trend that began well before Obama was sworn in.

In December, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, a record 95,102,000 Americans were not in the labor force, 47,000 more than in November; and the labor force participation rate was 62.7 percent, a tenth of a point higher than in November. …

People over age 16 who are no longer working or even looking for work, for whatever reason (retirement, school, personal preference, or gave up), are counted as not participating in the labor force.

I guess I'll have to flog my 72-year-old parents back into the job market so the number will drop.

Well, this is one way to get to full employment — make the people who want jobs too depressed and frustrated to look anymore. And for the people who really don’t want to work, loosen up the eligibility for Welfare and Food Stamps, give them public housing and Obamacare and free Obama phones and let them sit on their asses all day watching cable TV and smoking pot.

We pay illegal central Americans to pick crops and cut lawns, or make all our shoes and iPhones in China and Vietnam, while 95 million Americans sit at home.

This occurs because we have the world’s reserve currency, which is printed and completely unbacked, and a Federal Reserve which supports massive government debt and suppresses interest rates to zero. It all supports the progressive-left nanny state which maintains this absurd situation.

There are a dozen businesses in my area wanting help for ordinary non-degree jobs.Pay $8.50 and up. With millions unemployed these should be filled almost immediately but many people think it easier to be on the dole.

We have a trade policy of allowing the importation of 3rd world made goods into the USA duty free while our exports get taxed heavily. This is situation was brought about and maintained by corruption at the highest levels involving both parties.

No other nation would do this to itself.

If you want to de industrialize a country, turn it to a service economy debtor nation, this is how you do it.

Plus the Unemployed U-3 numbers ( totals to 102 Million adults not working ) and the Under-employed who can not find full time jobs = U-6 numbers.

If a company cannot find the right people at a salary of $X then increase the salary by $Y. New salary offered would be $X + $Y. Not hard to figure out.

Businesses should not have to compete with government handouts for labor.Public assistance should be short-term and oriented towards returning people to productive work.

Maybe they shouldn’t but they do. The reality is to raise the rates and then people will come. Labor is like any other commodity. The laws of supply and demand apply.

Question: one would expect the workforce number to decrease since by now a good portion of the baby-boom generation has reached retirement age (65). Is there an upper age limit placed on the out-of-the-workforce number? To put it another way, is a 70 year old boomer included in that number? Or.ore likely, does it reflect the 50 to 65 year old unemployeds as companies manage healthcare cost risk by pushing out the older workers in favor of hiring the younger (and cheaper) set?

I do know if that you are over 50, your chance of getting hired on absent a critical skill is close to nil.

From what I can figure out around 60 million of that total number are retired or disabled collecting Social Security so that leaves 35 million young adults actually unemployed. I believe that represents more than a 4.7 unemployment rate. Does anyone make sense out of this?

This shouldn’t surprise anyone who takes a weekday off of work. There are non working people everywhere on the roads, in the stores, out to eat.

It would help to know how many of that number were those who went on SS (retirees) in that period.

Lots of retiring baby boomers out there. Many more to come.

The SS ponzi scheme should be crumbling apart any day now.

Bigger problem with SS (as happened during Obama’s time) is the increase in disability cases that are not of retirement age, many of them fraudulent.
