They need direct access the massive debt created by the US Government courtesy of our fiat currency and the Federal Reserve.
That’s actually very true to a point. Island people, including early Puerto Ricans, lived through long periods of isolation, and when a cargo ship actually made past the Royal Navy and fleets of pirates into San Juan harbor, the population always became ecstatic and hopeful for what goodies did the ships bring. To this day, that feeling is engrained in our DNA, and we still use the saying: “that’s what the ship brought”, when talking about something coming up short and you have to wait for the next delivery.
Outlaw socialism in the US first and I’d be happy to see the entire western hemisphere get annexed.
A fantasy, I’m afraid, that’ll never happen.
Even most “die hard” conservatives don’t want to see SS and Medicare go away.
PR needs to become a State of Mexico. Common language and all.
Just what we need. Another perpetual Welfare State just like California or New York.
After the 2012 referendum rejected statehood, Congress voted for the next referendum to be only two choices, independence or statehood, they would not have the choice of remaining as they are.
Cantor’s vote for Puerto Rican statehood was the reason I started agitating for his removal from office.
The Uniparty has already decided that they will be our 51st state.
There’s actually a growing movement to return Puerto Rico to Spain.
Exactly, the Dems will want to grant them electoral college votes too so they can win an election.
That was my second thought. (Though both are “Hispanic” countries)
“Hey Puerto Rico - you can become a state when Californexico leaves.”
We prefer Mexifornia as our title, although Californistan is now a contender.
Set them free. Viva la republica de puerto rica.
In some of those cultures, they build bamboo airplanes, etc. to entice the gods to bring the real planes. That’s how I see this election of representatives. They are “bamboo” representatives to entice the U.S. gods to bring them statehood. :-)
Indeed. I think PR should be frigging cut loose from this country and any benefits and financial assistance flowing to its citizens should be ended. There is absolutely no value-added here.
On the contrary, a PR State would irreparably harm our tenuous union. Better to sever the limb with gangrene than to let it poison the rest of the body.
It would remain the same regardless of statehood or not, n’est pas?
I have no problem with Puerto Rico becoming a state...
Part of the existing state of Florida!
No way in heck do they get 2 Senators!
We don't.
First of all, Statehood over Commonwealth Status in PR would bring all kinds of economic problems. They are much better off under Commonwealth than Statehood and that is why Statehood always gets voted down. Secondly, if the Statehood referendum succeeded and they elected 2 Senators and 5 Representatives, just what party do you think they would belong to? BINGO-Democrat. That is reason enough to keep the status quo. That same reasoning is why Washington DC will never be given Statehood Status. The Dems. would just love to have the PR and DC votes in their column.
INDEPENDENCE NOW!
Only if they adopt English as an official language. Otherwise, they can go jump.
NO! No more leeches.
