I think they are afraid that if they did call it and other crimes a racist hate crime that the race war would begin.
They may be too late to stop it because the racists won’t stop attacking and we have to do something.
How anyone, much less a police chief, could call it an act of stupidity is astonishing. It was intentional and vile, and those thugs need to be prosecuted and thrown into jail for a long, long time. Otherwise, they remain a threat to anyone else whom they might feel like torturing that day. Plus, others of the same mindset need to be deterred from thinking they can do this, too, and get away with it.
