If a tough new proposal in Utah becomes law, just a few drinks or even a few swigs could put you over the limit for drunk driving.
An effort is underway in the state to lower the legal blood-alcohol concentration for driving to .05 a first in the nation. Currently, all 50 states have a .08 cap, eschewing suggestions from the National Transportation Safety Board to redefine what constitutes drunk driving.

Maybe they do a comparison study of driving impairment with:
1) driver over .05
2) driver putting on makeup
3) driver talking on cell phone.
4) driver with 3 kids under age 6 in car.
Driver under 25, driver with less than 8 hour sleep, driver who has caused a few accidents
Utah:
1/3 non-mormon (me, for instance)
1/3 Jack Mormon (in the book - don’t practice the religion)
1/3 Mormon - Religious to the nth degree
plenty of boozers in this state keep the liqueur stores quite profitable, thank you
Inaccurate article:
Colorado DUI limit: .08%
Colorado DWAI (Driving while ability impaired) .05%
Colorado DWAI (if under 21 years of age) .02%!
I was referring to around 15 or 20 years ago, when I was in law enforcement. Yes, it has been lowered pretty much across the board.
FWIW, I think 0.08% is appropriate.
It takes quite a few drinks for the average person to reach 0.08%. Far too many.
My basic problem with this deals with enforcement. It may be different in other states, but in my state (KS), the local police wait for some state level ‘DOT Grant’ (ie our gas tax money), to pay for OVERTIME, so the police can set up roadblock checkpoints.
And it is at these checkpoints that the police use scientific instruments to split hairs about tenths of a percentage point (and make sure the revenue collectors have been satisfied by checking for past tickets, current tags, etc.)
IOW, its already so low, the only way to ID these drivers is with a roadblock - they don’t obviously exhibit signs of drunk driving. Meaning DUI enforcement has passed the threshold of revenue production, like most traffic enforcement.
Usually when a drunk kills someone, he’s ‘twice the legal limit’, or worse...ie obviously and visibly drunk. I know we have to have a line of demarcation...and 0.10 was probably that line. Now its just about money.
Europe did this to raise money.
Mormons don’t drink (or so they say). So they are expecting to get this from tourists, not locals. Remember alcohol was not sold in bars until recently. You had to buy it in a store and bring it to the bar where they would open it for you. Or you could join a private club for a night by paying 5 bucks at the door. But the skiing was good.
This legislation has been bought and paid for by the Utah legal defense establishment.
drunk driving is a pre-crime
hallmark of tyranny is arresting citizens for pre-crimes.
A money making racket for the state.
That’s about 1 drink per hour for most people.
Give her credit, Ayn Rand called it. Making criminals out of as many honest citizens as possible.
“Mormons dont drink (or so they say). “
I dated a Mormon girl once. About sex, she said, “I’m Mormon.” “Nuts.” “Oh, silly, that just means we don’t tell anyone.”
“An effort is underway in the state to lower the legal blood-
alcohol concentration for driving to .05”
Attention those who drink responsibly, now they’re after you.
IIRC, Utah has a strange law about where alcohol can be sold, more restrictive than most states. I do not remember the details and cannot look right now.
Good catch on the statistics.
This is not about public safety. It is about self-righteousness and the Public Sector Pharisees signaling to the world how much better they are than you or me. These fascists will never stop until the world is one big concentration camp.
Plus what about the millions on other psychoactive drugs? Zoloft? Prozac? Oxys? These mess with your judgement as thoroughly as alcohol does. Shouldn’t users of these dangerous drugs be banned from driving as well? Cold medicines can make you dangerous behind the wheel. Or what about octogenarians? I can guarantee that a 30 year old at a blood alcohol level of .08 or even .10 is less dangerous than most sober 85 year olds. Why not target oldsters? They cause more accidents than teens. In fact if you made the legal driving age 21-75 better than half of accidents would be prevented.
This is fun. Eventually using specious reasoning we can ban EVERYONE from driving. Lol!
Why shouldn’t you invite a mormon to go fishing? He’ll drink all the beer.
How do you stop the Mormon from drinking all the beer? Invite another Mormon.
