US condemns Pyongyang missile plan, warns against 'provocative' actions

Washington (AFP) - The United States on Sunday sharply condemned a North Korean plan to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile and warned Pyongyang against "provocative actions."
The toughly worded US statement called on "all states" to show the North that any unlawful actions would have "consequences."
It was issued by the Pentagon at a sensitive time -- just weeks before President Barack Obama is due to hand power over to his successor, Donald Trump.
The statement came hours after Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, said his country was close to testing such a missile, which would be capable of reaching American shores.
"We are in the final stages of test-launching the intercontinental ballistic missile," Kim said in a televised New Year's speech, pointing to a string of nuclear and missile tests last year.
He said Pyongyang was now a "military power of the East that cannot be touched by even the strongest enemy."

No beating around the bush. It should have been:
called on "all states"Chicom to show the North...
P!
Our response should be that if the least piece of that missle falls on U.S. soil, very shortly thereafter their will be no such place as Pyongyang save for a nuclear rubbish heap.
Aother “red line” perhaps...?
If Obama hadn’t killed off all our anti-missile laser programs, this would not be an issue. You launch your ‘test’ ICBM, we shoot it down in international airspace before it can threaten anyone, problem solved.
A very strongly worded letter ... that should do it! Still left in the bag of tricks is bold font, increased font size, and stompy feet.
A better course would have been to keep silent and secretly program coordinates for Pyongyang and known atomic sites into American missiles
“STOP,”, or I’ll yell “STOP!”, again!
Stop it or Obama will unfriend you. If you keep it up he may even suspend your Netflix account!
Thought hussein was going to fix this 8 yrs ago...
Donald Trump wants to concentrate on the US economy, which includes immigration. He doesn’t want to deal with wars. I think he knows the 80’s were relatively peaceful due to “peace through strength”.
How do you think Donald Trump will handle North Korea?
I don’t see him trying to appease North Korea, but I don’t see him pushing for UN sanctions either.
I think he plans to push China hard with respect to North Korea, trade, and currency while be rebuilds US forces. China will try to push back to threatening to invade Taiwan, but if Taiwan was such a pushover, they would have done it years ago.
I think it is still true that China needs us more than we need them.
A fusillade of words will never stop an incoming missile.
Somehow I doubt that fat little turd actually has the capacity to launch an ICBM...
I think the word “intercontinental” to fat boy means something else...
U.S. hasn't used its leverage, so China feels it can push U.S. around. It has been clear for some time that there should be more than nice talk to force China to use its leverage on N. Korea. If it doesn't, then it should be prepared to pay economic cost.
As punishment he’ll deport the diplomats of an innocent country.
Agreed. 10 years of sanctions and NK is knocking on the door of having an ICBM capability. Fail. This is an issue that needs to be resolved once and for all.
Or we can do what we normally do. point, make fun of Kim Jong-un’s hair, and laugh. Well, ridicule hasn’t stopped their progress. I’m so sick and tired of this game:
1.) They’ll never develop an implosion device
2.) They’re 3-5 years away from a device
3.) Oh, it was just a fizzle
4.) It wasn’t actually a bomb but a Trinity ‘device’
5.) It was smaller than Hiroshima
6.) They’ll never miniaturize it
7.) They don’t have the missiles
8.) Their missiles always fail
9.) Their missiles can’t reach the United States
Anybody else see a pattern here?
Another red line! NK quivers!
Perhaps if the world woke up on Jan. 21st (US Time) and Pyongyang no longer existed, a lot of problems would be solved.
