Ronda Rousey knocked out in 48 seconds at UFC 207

LAS VEGAS – Ronda Rousey was once again pummeled by a striker and lost her second consecutive bout. The former women’s bantamweight champion was completely outclassed in the striking game by Amanda Nunes, who stopped Rousey at 48 seconds of the first round to retain her women’s bantamweight championship in the main event of UFC 207 at T-Mobile Arena.

Nunes landed a big right just seconds into the fight that clearly hurt Rousey, who was fighting for the first time since a stunning defeat at the hands of Holly Holm on Nov. 14, 2015.

Rousey tried to throw punches with Nunes, but she had nothing to offer. Nunes was blistering her with combinations, hitting her with virtually everything she threw.

“This is amazing,” Nunes said in exultation.

Look, man, I was never with Ali's politics, his personality, or his attitude in general, but to advance the notion that Ali wasn't great at his chosen profession is the height of denial.

One can argue whether he was the greatest ever or not, but Ali was certainly "great" by an reasonable definition of the term...

The only thing “great” about Ali was the massive media sales operation for him by leftwing media writers who never had a fight with their own sisters.

They hit like girls. Strong girls who train, but hit like girls nonetheless.

Not only do I find the promotion of bloodsport with women disgusting, but yeah, it's a joke. It's like watching two children fight. And I find the people who glorify this ridiculous: "Oooh look at how badass Rousey or Nunes or whoever is! She could probably kick all of us guys' asses! Weee!" No, she couldn't, but there seems to be a certain class of men who revel in putting women on a pedestal and bowing down before them, and plenty of this type hang out on FR.

Rousey would be the fist to agree that men hit harder than women.

I’ll reiterate what I said last night, if this is it for Rousey she’ll be remembered as some combination of Mike Tyson (from invincible to outclassed in no time flat) and Royce Gracie (initially dominant in nascent sport but left behind as it evolved).

BTW, there is a World Series of Fighting card on NBC right now. Just missed a fight between Jake Shields and Jon Fitch.....not too broken up about that. Main Event up next, Justin Gaethje v. some guy.

ping me on who wins the gaethje fight please-

I don’t think rousey was tyson like- she didn’t have near the power (relatively speaking-) she was a great wrestler- Judo- but puncher? Meh- had she met good strong punchers who could avoid takedowns, she wouldn’t have been as dominant - her competition was ok, but now we’re seeing stronger women and more rounded women that can withstand her takedown attmepts-

I agree she is being left behind- because she isn’t as rounded as she needs to be- Tyson though burst onto the scene with massive massive power and great avoidance skills- His power was untouchable- He was just a freak of nature- He learned how to harness leverage, and mixed with his power it was devastating- even on much larger opponents- Rousey didn’t fight people outside of her weight really- Her competition was pretty weak (relatively speaking)- but her power wasn’t freakish like tyson’s was- it was impressive as far as takedowns, but not freakish

Watching a tyson fight- viewers would sit up straight and wince in sympathy for the opponent- “Daggum- that was brutal” was a typical response- his power was just something to behold- Tyson was a puke- but by golly he was a true force to be reckoned with

See my post #130 Re Gaethje fight. Gaethje won.

Rousey I compare to Tyson in terms of career arc, not punching power of course! She was untouchable till she wasn’t, just like him.

ah i see-

Did gaethje win handily? Must have been a good fight- I don’t care for his arrogance, but he is a really good fighter- seen him in some real toe to toe battles before-

i think first fight i saw was rampage in the pride league- when he power slammed the dude and won- then i saw some liddel fights- then some ax murderer fights- wow- was almost hooked- then saw some Fedor fights- definitely hooked from there on out- At first I wasn’t too sold on the art- the no holds barred kicking in head while down, stomping on head while down etc- Wasn’t a real fan of that kind of fighting- i gravitated more to the stand up toe to toe fighters like Chuck- Rampage- little evil etc- I appreciated the art of judo and jujitsu too but liked the fights that went toe to toe-

I understood the ‘defend yourself at all times’ idea behind the no holds barred- but still- it was just a bit too brutal watching someone’s head get stomped on repeatedly- or soccer kicked when the person was practically unconscious and on the ground-

I’ll never forget that fantastic rockem sockem match between Fry and Takayama- absolute instant classic fight- Here’s the video

Like I was telling Chris Rousey`s, biggest problem is she doesn’t have a legit Camp if she could get into a real Camp and have top tranniners harness and evolve her fighting skills she could easily be a force to be dealt with again.

Unfortunately for Rousey her fighting took on a much larger, political meaning as she was adopted by leftists who saw her as a next gen feminist. Her fighting was imbued with more meaning than it should have been and her losses will seem more tragic. I am no expert on the sport, but it seems that Ms. Rousey is a good clincher from her judo background, but possesses very serious flaws that were never addressed. On her way up she faced inferior opposition and did not have good coaching to make her focus on her weaknesses. She was badly beaten he very first time she faced a good boxer like Holly Holm. In the 13 months since that fight she seemingly made no adjustments to her boxing ability, for which I blame her coach primarily.

It’s a shame but the only way she comes back is through smaller, less lucrative fights against substandard competition, in hopes she can address her flaws and claw her way back. The potential damage she would suffer along the way makes that a dubious proposition at her age.

No, Gaethje took a lot of punishment, he just stood in front of this guy and let him hit him. I should stop calling him some guy, his name is Luiz Firmino, he was in Pride eons ago.

I think I had Firmino slightly ahead after 3, but his eye was swollen shut and the doctor made the ref stop it.
