The song is bi-tonal, being in both D minor and F Major at the same time. The bass line that underscores the verse is in D minor, as is the verse. The chorus switches to F Major, but the D minor bass line continues, which gives it an odd sound. (Bi-tonalism may still be illegal in some states.)
