10 Places With the Highest Rates of Car Theft in the U.S.
U.S. News ^ | Dec. 29, 2016 | Devon Thorsby

U.S. News compiled data on car thefts from the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2014 – the most recent year for complete data from the bureau – to determine which of the 100 largest metro areas in the country had the highest rate of car theft.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, takes the top spot for highest rate of car theft, with a total of 6,131 thefts in 2014 and 676.9 thefts per 100,000 people. The City of Albuquerque acknowledges its high rate of auto theft on its website, noting New Mexico’s shared border with Mexico gives car thieves added incentive because they can take the stolen vehicles across the border and sell them.

“I don’t think they’re stealing old Plymouths or grandma cars.”

There is no such thing as an old car here. I was driving through Salinas one Saturday morning this last Fall on my way to Laguna Seca Raceway and got into “the morning rush to the fields” by the local farm workers. No old cars with those people either. And when I drive down town in the small East Bay community where I live, I usually see at least a half-dozen Teslas. I am beginning to think most of Tesla’s production stays very close to their plant in Fremont.

Now, now. Just yesterday a freeper was complaining about my negative remarks concerning San Fransicko and he said San Fran is the finest, most beautiful city in the nation and not to believe what I read in the news.

So, the article mentions SF as a hot bed of car theft. According to the freeper I shouldn't believe it.

Yes, but then Milwaukee is a liberal bastion within a barely red state..

“I’d say you’re a bit low on tax paying citizens but you suit yourself.”

That depends entirely on where you happen to live. And it isn’t a problem that is particular to California. Unless you live in some state that doesn’t have a major city ( and I don’t know what state that might be except maybe Montana and the Dakotas), you have the same problem. The major cities across the country are where our trash people live and fester. Where we live, homes start at about $1 million and go up from there. Plenty of taxpayers here, no crime, excellent schools, and excellent weather as well. Go to Los Angeles, and it’s a different story. That is the genesis of California’s problems and hopefully, it will be the cause of the financial collapse of this state as a whole. Anyway, we’re waiting, because it can’t come soon enough.

With Spokane and Milwaukee being the exceptions: I see a list of West coast cities worth avoiding...

All those poor illegal aliens got to have SOME way to get to the DC Metro area. They can’t fly, and ride sharing is so much more economical and environmentally friendlier. It’s easy to get a Kali license, too.

Poor old Bakersfield.
Didn’t win this one, but we did win #1 for dirtiest air in the US!

They did not meet the 100 largest city threshold.

My bad, I did not realize you meant they missed no. 1. I thought you meant they were not on the list.

Shocking San Diego is not on that list. The saying was back when I lived there, that your vehicle would be in Mexico before you reported it stolen.

You are correct. Last report I read of most stolen cars were mostly Honda economy car crap. The Rice Boyz need parts for their ridiculous buzz bombs.

Yes, I see a lot of Teslas here on the SF peninsula as well. I’m in Burlingame quite often, and nothing but luxury cars everywhere. No old cars. In SF, lots of broken auto glass downtown at curbside due to thieves. That’s always been the case in Civic Center. Never leave anything inside that can be seen from outside. When driving into the city, I use my old truck, never been bothered.

I guarantee that no one will pay you to live in California!

It is literally the easiest place in the world to live, until you look for a place to sleep that is.

Massive housing shortage.

You can offer a cardboard appliance box for rent, and probably find a taker.

People in our neighborhood have been caught renting out their travel trailers for hundreds of dollars a month.

I’ve thought for some time that sports stadiums were lightning rods for car thieves/vandalizers...the owner will be gone for 3 hours...

I escaped Bakersfield last year - we’ve Gone Galt to Tennessee. After living in Mexifornia for ~22 years, it’s a breath of fresh air to be in the US now. Hope you get to do the same.

I have a nephew who was into that scene. He poured perhaps $35,000 into his car. Huge subwoofers and amps in the rear. Murals painted inside and under the hood. Lots of polished chrome and brass underneath (yes, the underside of the chassis). They hike up the rear of the car at car shows and place mirrors on the ground so one can admire it. Ridiculous! All that, and he couldn't find a decent girlfriend. Just a waste. Plus he was always afraid of thieves. I think he sold it recently to settle down, finally growing up.
