Going Solo: George Michael ... Mark Steyn
Steyn Online ^ | 27 Dec 2016 | Mark Steyn

I surprised myself by how sad I felt on hearing of George Michael's death on Christmas Day. It's the faintly depressing sadness that comes from being reminded, as with Amy Winehouse or Michael Jackson, that a longtime beloved comic figure in Fleet Street is a real human being whose pathologies have finally caught up with him. In contrast to Jacko, the principal victim of George Michael was himself. He died alone at his Oxfordshire cottage, his body discovered by a boyfriend whose relationship with George commanded no fidelity from the star. His protective publicist said it was a heart attack. The boyfriend carelessly revealed that, after years of other abuses, George had latterly moved on to heroin. He looked all of his 53 years and then some.

There was something touchingly sincere in the way his fans took to the internet to observe solemnly that it was his "Last Christmas". I always liked that song, mainly because I was impressed by the scrupulousness of George's feminine rhymes, which was unusual by 1984 and is even more so today:

Tell me, baby, do you recognize me?
Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me...

And dreck it was. From a prancing fairy and -- we find out now -- a junkie to boot.

What price fame?

I hate “Last Christmas” with a passion. Depressing as heck and little to do with celebrating Christmas but they play it every year on every store Christmas music track. If I am going to listen to Christmas music I want it to put me in a happier frame of mind, not depress me.

“He [Steyn] can be a bit verbose...”

I like Mark, but he’s worn my ears completely out. When he subs for Rush these days, I quietly turn him off. I just can’t take the staccato, stream of consciousness rambling anymore.

One difference is that this man had money to buy food. A lot of junkies forgo food and necessities to get their next high -- skipping meals, hygiene, clothing, etc.

All sad cases -- unfortunate really.

Running the other morning I was litening to a few of his tunes that I liked and was thinking, comparing his death and story to Bowies.

Bowies was a story of the excess that youth allows and buys. Then a story of maturity and redemption.

George Michael's was just the opposite. It was the unwillingness to let go of those excesses that youth allows and then a bitterness at life that those times have passed you by.

That's not easy for anyone. Especially people who, seemingly had so much of those door opening qualities--beauty, money, fame, etc.

It is so much easier and graceful to accept those days are over than and adjust one's life accordingly. The last ten years of his life, maybe even closer to 20, looked anything but pleasant.

All this time I thought those songs were sung by a girl. The Christmas and the Go Go...

I dont know why I thought heroin use emaciated you.

I figured it took away your appetite.

Never had a scientific reason for thinking it.

What you say makes sense.

All of the guys I mentioned were overweight.

Until his death was announced the other day, I had never heard of George Michael.

I hate “Last Christmas” with a passion.

Is that the one that goes, "Last Christmas I gave you my heart, but the very next day, you gave it away"? Goes on to say "this year,... I'll give it to someone special" Well, fool, isn't that what you THOUGHT you did LAST YEAR? I always figured it wouldn't go any better THIS year.

A lot of these people die of depression and addiction. A guy told me its stunning how fast a drug addict can go from an illness compared to an average person.

Steyn provides another knock-out obituary on a recently deceased celebrity - his collection of obits on the famous from Ronald Reagan to Rose Mary Woods - Passing Parade - is an intriguing and entertaining read....

Really? I had a good belly laugh in a few spots. I thought George Michael to be a bit too into himself.

He’s lucky he didn’t wind up killing anyone from his many car accidents.

He was quite a pathetic person, but people want to believe he was that perky guy in all of those Wham! videos.

Wasn’t into 80s music at all. The only LP I recall seriously liking (and buying) was Centerfield by John Fogerty.

After George Michael died I pulled up something of his on youtube and quickly recalled why I didn’t like it. Oh well.

Silver lining - turns out he donated millions of pounds to charities anonymously over the years. Despite my disagreement with his lifestyle and abuse I admire his trying to make the world better with no ego involved.
