CNN falls sharply in ratings after election; Fox News grows
Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | 06 December 2016 | Rodney Ho

With the election of Donald Trump, Fox News has actually seen ratings grow since November 8.

CNN and MSNBC, on the other hand, have watched viewership fall off sharply.

“I believe Fox News’ prospects for 2017 to be very strong,” Fox News’ James Murdoch said at a conference this week, adding that ratings “are less down than we expected.” Murdoch also said CNN and MSNBC numbers have dropped “quite a bit more” than Fox’s, partly because they had risen so much more during the campaign.

Over the years, the Fox News audience has been more loyal and less prone to breaking news cycles than CNN or MSNBC.

TVNewser did a quick check and found overall ratings for Fox News grew 16 percent from 1.57 million during the two months prior to Election Day to 1.823 million since November 8.

I quit watching Fox a long time ago, except for an occasional lunch time listen to hear the headlines. During the election, I watched Lou Dobbs on Fox Business, because he was up front that he was all in for Trump.

I can’t stand hypocrites that try to act like they are objective journalists and slant the news and their views so much that the scales are almost vertical. Sick of the sycophants.

OK here is my question ... We will use the articles Prime Time viewer number Pre vs Post election viewers

Fox stayed even at 2.9M
CNN dropped 1.65M to .96M (-42%)
MSNBC Dropped 1.55M to .96M (-38%)

I would assume a drop after the election is normal as the game is over and people move on.

Fox breaking even is good news for them BUT

with both CNN & MSNBC losing viewers equally at what point do they become a not viable economic business? How far do they have to drop in viewers to close up shop? Are we getting close?

I feel with in 5 years, NBC, CBS and ABC will drop the 6:30pm 30 Min Newscast, as that time slot will be more profitable with a TMZ or Judge Judy show.

Eric Bolling and Jesse Watters both do a good job of filling in for O’Reilly. Unfortunately it’s not permanent.

What, did he announce that Megyn's contract won't be renewed in 2017?

watched election night coverage on CBS, CNN and MSNBC and it was awful.

Are you kidding me, the coverage was SUPERB.

I still watch clips of it on YouTube it was so good.

Not CNN, but here is one that will be classic: 'Best Of The Young Turks Election Day Meltdown 2016: From smug to utterly devastated'. (Big lie told within minutes, and it just gets better from there.

26 GLORIOUS minutes.

Unfortunately CNN & MSNBC don’t care about ratings because since cable channels are bundled they get paid no matter what. Every time someone pays their cable bill CNN & MSNBC gets a cut whether that person watched them or not.

Trump & the Republicans should remove the rules that let cable companies bundle channels and let/make the go “A La Carte”. If that happens CNN/MSNBC/ESPN better change fast or they will go out of business

“I feel with in 5 years, NBC, CBS and ABC will drop the 6:30pm 30 Min Newscast, as that time slot will be more profitable with a TMZ or Judge Judy show.”

Here’s the catch. When the FCC licenses these stations, there is a requirement to demonstrate that a certain portion of their programming is ‘for the public good’. Most stations fulfill this requirement with ‘news’, since they can still make money off of it, as opposed to a telethon.

So my local station found a workaround. ABC, NBC, and Fox combined their news teams, and now broadcast the exact same newscast on all 3 stations.

So, I would expect a consolidation, but the newscasts will still be there.

My favorite was ABC. Being a hard news broadcast, they brought in Michael Strahan. He was stationed in Times Square, on a stage with a US map, with states set up to be lit red or blue.

The idea was the news broadcast would periodically ‘check in’ on Strahan, to see how people were reacting to the election news. But lets face it, this was meant to be a block party, filled with NY Hillary supporters. Strahan was the hype man, and we were going to be treated to the building party atmosphere as the night progressed.

Around 10:30, they went to Strahan, and somebody commented that they could hear a pin drop - and they had never observed Times Square to be that quiet ever before.

I don’t think they went back to Strahan after that.

I use to have Fox on whenever I was home. Now I just watch Tucker. Most of Fox is nevertrump. Twenty somethings who have never had real jobs trying to tell me what it means to be a conservative. A bunch of trust fund kids. Fox is no different than any other network.

I have heard is that ESPN keeps cable a float as we are a sport culture. That being said they have very high overhead. Fox has a studio in NY, while ESPN has to cart a truck to ever school that has a game and that is the biggest reason the cable bill goes up.

I agree about ala cart. I would trade CNN for a History International, Military channel in a eye blink.

I’ve outgrown both Fox and Limbaugh. Too much globalism for my taste. I can only take them is tiny doses anymore.

An investigation might show that CNN conspired to throw the election.

Faux Business for the most part was anti Trump. They are the chief propaganda engine for the “Chap Labor Express” and hated Trump’s idea of tariffs and killing NAFTA and TPP. Especially that globalist witch Bartiloma.

Relatively speaking, they can drop sharply every single night until they get down to just one viewer.

If they lose that one, the drop would be 100 % which is a rather sharp drop.

Yes they were good from the schadenfreude angle but the graphics were horrible, the commentary condescending, visually they were a mess etc.
