As President Obama prepares to leave office, his legacy will include an increase in the number of Americans using food stamps.

The number of food stamps recipients went up by 10.7 million people, a 32 percent jump, since President Obama took office in 2009, according to data released by the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

I’ve seen signs at grocery stores that say something like can use or applicable for WIC.

From what I’ve read, Congress reauthorizes SNAP (EBT card program) every 5 years. Can’t Congress limit what EBTs are used for? I wouldn’t mind seeing it go back to the coupon system. If I wanted to get really down to the nitty gritty, have a system like that was used in the Depression - each family can come to a location, perhaps weekly) and obtain a supply of food needed for the family - fruits, vegetables, certain canned goods, milk, cereal, products for baking, such as flour and sugar, and certain meats, etc. While that would eliminate the number on SNAP (due to fraud and abuse), we’d hear screams of racism, Pubbies want the poor to go hungry, etc., etc.

We all know there is a lot of fraud in the EBT program - selling them for cash, obtaining under fraudulent circumstances, etc., etc.
