Vladimir Putin, Unsurprised by Trump’s Remarks, Says Russia Wants No Nuclear Arms Race

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Friday that a statement by Donald J. Trump, the American president-elect, that the United States should expand its nuclear capabilities was not a surprise because he had said the same thing during the election campaign.

Asked about the American election, Mr. Putin, who has made no secret of his distaste for Hillary Clinton, said her defeat was a “humiliation” for the Democratic Party.

The Russian president, speaking at his annual marathon news conference, also said that Russia would continue to modernize its armed forces, including nuclear weapons, but he added that the level of spending would diminish somewhat in coming years.

..

On the American election, Mr. Putin said the Democrats were trying to blame their defeat on external factors like Russia. He said his popularity among American Republicans was not personal, but a reflection of their worldview.

“It means that a significant part of the American people have the same perception about how the world should be developing,” he said. “It is good that people support us in this, in terms of traditional values.” He said it was a good basis for improving Russian-American relations.

Mr. Putin mocked recent statements by President Obama and others that former President Ronald Reagan would be turning in his grave over the support for Russia and for Mr. Putin among Republicans.

If anything, he said, it would be former presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt who would be turning in their graves over the losses suffered by the Democratic Party.

Mr. Roosevelt united the country, Mr. Putin said, but “the current administration divides it.”

I'm reminded of prophesies from Nastrodamus promulgated in "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow", a show on HBO growing up in the early '80s. One thing I remember is a decades long war against Islam. After initial wins on their side in Paris, a major attack on NY and other Western cities, "the eagle and the bear" fight together to eventually win the war. Think about that last part, recent developments, and when this program aired...

Another thing that has come to mind many times since 9/11 in relation to this program... the Islamic leader to do us the greatest damage wore a blue turban. Since Obama, I've taken that particular prophesy to be about his national identity and even Obama's political affiliation. Consider the damage he has been able to inflict on us.

The way things are going currently, in the not too distant future, we could see an alliance of America and Russia against the Islamic Caliphate of Europe.

I’d be satisfied if we would hook up with Russia and seize the Middle East oilfields. Kill the beast graveyard dead.

How many countries are you willing to sacrifice to Russia in the hope of a warmer relationship? Or are you merely suggesting that NATO should have held back and allowed Russia to expand to it?

I see an alliance of USA, Russia, Egypt, Israel, jordan, Syria, and Iran.

Yes, Iran. After the overthrow of the current crazies. We had the opportunity to help several years ago but Obama didn’t want to.

We can make the Middle East oilfields nearly worthless by glutting the market with our own production until such time as technology is able to cost effectively replace fossil fuel as the dominant energy source. Thorium reactors from sea to shining sea come to mind.

Putin and Trump get along as they are two alpha males and they understand each other at a fundamtal level.

As for the black faggot beta islamic president, Putin has nothing but contempt and that is a huge problem.

Now Putin’s adversaries in the US government will be McCain and his sidekick faggot.

True. Just not sure we can trust any Muslim nation.

Although you do have a point. Iran used to be a fairly modern society before Carter allowed it to be screwed up by the radicals.

I can understand why the former republics want to join Nato. I am only speculating it is not in America’s best interest to push too hard on Russia. They lost the cold war. They have their own security concerns. We both humiliate them and cause them security concerns. Thus they act aggressively, which is entirely predictable based on our foreign policy. You think the Russians are just gonna stand by and let a pro-euro government enact real change in Ukraine? But America was pushing for such a thing. Then the Russians separatist start a civil war with military backing from Putin. We act surprised. Did we expect them to just meekly accept our worldview?

I’m not sure that the Middle East will ever be completely out of the picture. In studying the history of the industry, I found that much of the Arab oil was discovered simply by drilling in locations where it oozed up from the earth.

In other words, they’ve got lots of it and its easy to produce. No deep wells, no fracking, no horizontal drilling.

Yes, we can marginalize them more than in the past, but I’m not sure their oil will ever be completely out of the picture.

I’m not sure it is in our best interest to “save” countries that used to be former Soviet Republics. And do you want America to be forever tied to eastern European security near the borders of Russia?

It’s less a question of sacrificing other countries as it is a question of what is America’s proper role in the world. And in regards to being the world’s policeman, there are limitations when it comes to countries with nuclear arsenals.

There are other enemies besides Russia that must be considered as well.

Both Iran and North Korea have missiles that must be defended against.

I don’t know how old our nucs are but can easily believe a program of upgrade to 2017 technology. Not all at once mind you but in a prudent manner.

I would think that we presently have de facto amity with Russia. There is talk but not any real action. All know Mother Russia is very sick and not capable of much sustained activity. The action in Syria is depletion of monstrous stockpiles serving no real purpose any more.

Very true. Thing is their society is sustained by oil revenue. Drive down the price, and keep em busy looking for something to eat rather than spreading their hateful religion.

If Trump can find a way to get Russia out of Ukraine and block Iran again, there is no reason why we can not be cordial again if not allies.

“If Trump can find a way to get Russia out of Ukraine”

Is this in our national interest? Does it align with Trump’s mission statement?

I have a friend who is now a US citizen but was raised in Russia. When I discussed how when I was in elementary school we would practice getting under desks because we feared someday Russia would attack us. She laughed and said school children were terrified there that we would attack them. We have common interests with the regular citizens who are Christian.
