A former Idaho high school football player originally charged with sexually assaulting his mentally disabled teammate will avoid jail time and escape classification as a sex offender after pleading guilty to a lesser felony.

John R.K. Howard, 19, of Keller, Tex., pleaded guilty to a felony count of injury to a child and will be sentenced to two to three years of probation and up to 300 hours of community service, the Idaho Statesmen reported. A judge will decide the final sentence on Feb. 24.

Deputy Attorney General Casey Hemmer said if the case had gone to trial, prosecutors would have been able to prove Howard kicked a coat hanger into his teammate’s rectum during the October 2015 attack — but a modified guilty plea submitted by the teen allows him to maintain his innocence while still acknowledging he would have otherwise been convicted.

I hate plea deals like this - he is a sick-o who is quite likely to treat others badly (and possibly with more violence) in the future. Also - acts like this are extremely rarely isolated incidents.

A lawsuit against the high school filed by the victim’s family also detailed a long history of racial abuse and bullying against the student. The lawsuit, which seeks $10 million in damages, revealed the victim “was taunted and called racist names by other members of the team which names included ‘Kool-Aid,’ ‘chicken eater,’ ‘watermelon’” and the n-word, the Washington Post reported.

Justice style the 21st century Amerikan way. Free the perp, punish the victim.

Anywhere else, this guy would be drawn & quartered.

This story made me ask my son, a captain on the wrestling team, if there has ever been any joking or even hinting about doing any hazing to younger or weaker kids on the team. He said no and that another captain met a wrestler from another state, whose team “did stuff to him in the shower” after not making weight, at a summer camp. After he told that story they all made a pact to never let any form of hazing happen on the team.

There are sociopaths in various activities, not just sports and not all athletes are predatory sociopaths.

Raping a disabled teammate isn’t just “jocks doing what they do”.
