Chinas Defence Ministry said on Saturday it had been in talks with the United States about returning an underwater drone taken by a Chinese naval vessel in the South China Sea, but the U.S. was not helping by hyping up the issue.
The drone was taken on Thursday, the first seizure of its kind in recent memory, about 50 nautical miles northwest of Subic Bay off the Philippines, just as the USNS Bowditch was about to retrieve the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), U.S. officials said.
The Defence Ministry said a Chinese naval vessel discovered a piece of unidentified equipment and checked it to prevent any navigational safety issues, before discovering it was a U.S. drone.
China decided to return it to the U.S. side in an appropriate manner, and China and the U.S. have all along been in communication about it, the ministry said on its website.
During this process, the U.S. sides unilateral and open hyping up is inappropriate, and is not beneficial to the smooth resolution of this issue. We express regret at this, it added.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump weighed in to the row on Saturday, tweeting: China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters rips it out of water and takes it to China in unprecedented act.

I guess the typo didn’t matter after all.
Trump speaks, China bends a little...
I am exhausted from all this winning. I need to take a nap.
There is a POEM in there somewhere.
LOL.Me too!
All this a full month+ before President-elect Trump takes office.
As if all the ‘your’ and ‘loose’ denizens of the language even noticed.
Thanks, China, that was a good move. Wouldn’t take much for Americans to start turning over goods again and putting back the stuff labeled Made In China.
Ha haaaaaa!!!! The Trump Effect continues!
What’s the big deal. They surely had to check it out. US would do the same.
Hey China. We we we can do stuff.
President Trump sends out a little tweet and China buckles.
Now THAT is what I call being Presidented.
....but, but he misspelled a word!
This is unpresidented!
We wouldn’t in international waters, but we would in our own.
They did this in international waters.
I think that island China built presents a “navigational issue”.
It’s a real hazard to shipping.
Maybe everyone should have a look at it.
Did Obama say anything at all about what the Chinese did?
Or maybe he was too busy dealing with Putin about imaginary Russian hacking.
We found the errant little fella and took it over so it wouldn’t get lost. We’re the good guys in this. So what if we first took it to a chop shop and found out all of its secrets.
Here. Take it.
See. We’re the good guys.
:)

I’d like more details of the story.
The ocean is a big place.
Did the ChiComm ship just happen to be where the drone surfaced, to be retrieved by the US vessel, because it was shadowing the US vessel in the fashion of the Ruskie trawlers?
I do that more and more.
I don't know if any of you have noticed, but it seems to me that manufactured goods from Asia get worse and worse with each succeeding year of production.
The first year, those "GE" lightbulbs work just like they did for 100 years when they were made in Schenectady. Then, they last for shorter times. Now, sometimes they don't work.
My Keurig coffeemaker was $179 new, I can sell it on line for $500+ because the new ones are complete sh*t.
Almost like it was a plan...
