I don't understand this.

I like to shop for clothes in a store. See what's available. Try it on.

Yes, I will buy underwear online. Socks.

But clothing needs to be seen

I hope clothing stores don't disappear. It's hare to try clothes on through a computer screen.

Same here. That’s why God invented Costco.

People are using the retail stores as a sort of showroom, going and trying things on, checking them out and then going online for the cheapest price.

I don’t think it’s desirable that brick and mortar retail shuts down, but for higher end retailers especially, there’s a lot of overhead to carry with that big, fine store.

They can’t compete on price and never intended to compete on price, it’s the service, selection and overall experience that drives (or drove) their sales. It’s a rock and a hard place for department and specialty stores. All I can think of for them to do is to offer merch that cannot be bought anywhere else. They certainly can’t start blocking people from trying things on.

Many indoor malls have become depressing. Some near cities have become downright dangerous.

Most malls that have thrived have restyled themselves, likely at great cost. For the most part, they are upscale.

Brand outlet malls also seem to be doing well—they serve the middle. The one near me always has great deals on really good clothes.

Sears used to be the anchor store for many malls, and that has gone steadily downhill.

In a way its sad, but in a way not. Its the inevitable cycle of destruction & creation at work.

You get the hang of it after awhile. I do the overwhelming majority of my shopping on line. If you have Amazon Prime shipping is free as are returns, and depending on what state you live in possibly no sales tax. I love it, saves me time and money. Every Christmas present I bought this year except for 1 was purchased on line.

Yes but do you like shopping for clothes in ONE store, or two dozen? That’s why malls are dying. All the “end cap” stores (Penneys, Sears, Macys) are primarily clothing stores, and more half the stores no on the end caps are clothing stores. Meanwhile of course the shift to digital media has killed the book and record stores that used to take up a lot of space. Radio Shack is mostly dead, there’s general one store for stinky ointments that girls like, but they have a tendency to go under and be replaced every couple of years. Pretty much the food court is the only thing you can count on besides clothing stores, and most of the food sucks.

What I see is the looming death of “anchor stores”, huge department stores like Nordstrom. Sure, we need to try things on ... but those big stores have relatively lousy selection compared with the boutiques scattered thru the same mall.

I see the anchor stores dying off, and the malls figuring out how to expand the boutique offerings.

Been shopping at Lands End for almost 35 years. Great clothes, fit perfectly, plus everything comes with a 100% lifetime guarantee.
