German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen angered Saudi Arabians this week when she refused to wear traditional Muslim attire during her official visit to the kingdom, The Independent reported on Wednesday.
Von der Leyen shunned the abaya, the black full length dress that covers the entire body but not the face, during her diplomatic visit in Riyadh, according to the report.
The defense minister, who is a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party and the first woman in German history to hold the defense portfolio, was meeting Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman al Saud during her visit. …

It’s nice to see a German politician with a backbone. I hope she will rise in their government. We are westerners, and we should not bow down to archaic savages or their traditions.

My suspicion is that this is nothing more than a case of temporary grandstanding.
Throwing a bone to her party’s opponents meaning to say “see! we’re with you!” in order to put them back, quietly, on their knees for the next election cycle.
Let me add: No one should have anything to do with them.
The US does not need Saudi oil. Canada and the US have north of 2 TRILLION barrels of oil reserves (1.7 trillion barrels in the Alberta tar sands alone) along with the technology to recover, move, and refine it.
If the Germans need Saudi oil, let them deal with the Saudi's.
Finally! A Western woman refusing to wear the shackles of slavery in a fully islamic country.
If the visitor from Germany was a man he’d have to cover his ass.
Here’s a tinfoil hat theory: Merkel is in hot water. The House of Saud knows it, wants Merkel right where she is, and this is just a nice little bit of theatre to make Germany look like it’s still got some nads. Germany looks tough, and the Saudis pretend to be PO’ed. Just a theory.
This is another step in the right direction. I prefer patience and peaceful change to revolution, but reserve the right of revolution.
