Obviously a tragic scenario and one that should have had a better outcome.

Any encounter in the dark raises concerns, any report of possible weapon raises concerns and, deny it as the MSM tries, the current spate of police ambushes has got to weigh heavy here.

Anyone who has gone through the “Shoot / No Shoot” training can tell of the difficulty in making split-second LIFE-DEATH decisions. Yet even the best of these cannot cover all scenarios AND there is a very real difference between a test and real life.

The facts we know are probably insufficient to put ourselves in the place of the victim or police. Knowing (after the fact) that the victim had dementia is fact unknown to the police but an unknown is how was the victim dressed? Could they tell by outward appearance his age or was he wearing something like a hoodie that leaves an appearance that could range in all ages?

While this sounds like I am only taking the police side, I am also troubled by a near emptying of the magazine by the shooter. Seven shots sounds a lot like a panicked action and that is NOT a desired encounter outcome!

"Anyone who has gone through the “Shoot / No Shoot” training can tell of the difficulty in making split-second LIFE-DEATH decisions."

But it wasn't a life-death decision at all, was it? The cop was in no danger at all. It was all imaginary.

It seems the cops have transitioned from "defense of their person" to "can I make the case of defense" before they start shooting.

What reasonable person sees an old man with just his hand in a pocket and start shooting???

You know what this reminds me of??!! The ED209 scene in the original Robocop. The ED209 locks his guns and says "...you have 10 seconds to comply...9, 8, 7....1 BOOM"

Easily has a better outcome, police says “hands out and empty”, the guy pulls his hands out and empty, holds them, up, the cops can move in, frisk him, determine he’s not a threat, and everybody lives.

If cops knew the guy had dementia — wouldn’t make a difference, because he could have a gun in that pocket, and a dementia patient may be MORE, not LESS, likely to shoot a cop.

Can’t even fault the woman — some guy wanders up to you with his hand in his pocket demanding to get into your car, and you see metal (which apparently was real)? Of course you call the police.

If you have elderly people in your family that are so out of it mentally that they won’t understand how to respond to police, and will wander out of the house and harass neighbors to get into their cars — you should do something about that, before they wander into the street and get run over by a car, get shot by a neighbor who doesn’t want to be attacked, or like in this case, killed by police because they refuse to follow common sense orders.

7 shots? Once you shoot your weapon, you intend to kill. Might as well shoot enough times to do the job. Because if you shoot 3 times and miss vital organs, that gun is coming out of the pocket and you could end up dead.
