I’m not at all familiar with the geography of the area. If the Tigris River ran through a canyon or even a valley, then I could see the surge of water causing that kind of destruction even that far downstream. But my impression was that the region was fairly flat; and if so, I would think the water would spread out as it moved downstream. Could still cause a lot of damage, but probably not a 20 foot wall of water that far away.

My question is, if they know that the dam is on the brink of collapse, are they draining the reservoir behind it?

Exactly what I told my g-kids when Gore was howling that the glaciers would melt and drown the cities.
I pointed out that there wasn’t any thing to back the water up that deep and illustrated by setting an ice cube on the table.
