Donald Trump’s long-time but informal adviser Roger Stone says the Secretary of State job was dangled in front of Mitt Romney in order to “torture” him for previously opposing the president-elect.
During a Sunday appearance on InfoWars with Alex Jones, a conspiratorial media outlet that has become a mouthpiece of the next president, Stone called Romney a “choker” and said that Trump was simply toying with him.
“Donald Trump was interviewing Mitt Romney for Secretary of State in order to torture him,” Stone claimed on the program. “To toy with him. And given the history, that’s completely understandable. Mitt Romney crossed a line. He didn’t just oppose Trump, which is his democratic right, he called him a phony and a fraud. And a con man. And that’s not the kind of man you want as Secretary of State.”
Stone’s involvement with the current transition efforts is unclear as he is not formally advising Trump. But the two men have kept a close relationship for years and Stone claims that he was at Trump Tower last week. The transition team did not respond to a request for confirmation about his presence from The Daily Beast.

In my opinion, Romney was negotiating on behalf of the establishment Republican’s who were not going to show up at the Tower or Golf Course.
After the first meeting, Romney was sent away to provide the Trump response to GOPe who then countered with Romney’s second trip.
Romney’s niece got the consultation prize.
I seriously doubt revenge is high on Trump’s list.

Trump was probably taking action to quiet Romney, get to know Romney, and/or get information from Romney. Or maybe to mollify Romney supporters.
Stone should pray he doesn’t suffer the same fate as Atwater.

Stone just put an inadvertent distance between himself and Trump.
As a CEO, I think Trump learned to listen to all sides.
After doing so over the years, he came up with the policies he pushed this election cycle.
I have no problem with him listening to Romney and others. They may have certain insights that are helpful, by accident of course. Trump will weed that out.
It is never in your favor to be mean to people, and I think Stone saying this was improper. Let these folks think they contributed. That is more likely to keep them if not on your side, at least feeling like they had a voice, and couching their criticisms to a certain degree.
Putting heads on pikes has worked well to enforce social order in human history.

The President Elect has far more important things to do than indulge in petulance.
Romney made a lot of money in his life. Trump likes that. It’s informed several of his decisions so far.
I don’t think Romney has the foreign policy skillset for SoS, but I’d imagine jobs will appear as time passes that will prompt some phone calls.
And btw, we get about 15 zillion BS stories from right wing and left wing about who is interviewed for what. Then we find that people voluntarily withdrew from consideration.
Romney is an old man enjoying a comfortable retirement. He showed up because when the President Elect calls, you show up.
There doesn’t have to be anything else going on beyond that.
At least he is not his brother in-law or is given a ticket to Vegas!
It would be extra special if Romney, being in full suck-up mode, picked up the tab for the dinner.
