Clinton Won As Many Votes As Obama In 2012 — Just Not In The States Where She Needed Them Most

By David Lauter

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by at least 2.7 million, according to a final tally. The result marked the biggest gap between the popular vote and the electoral college in almost 150 years

The final results of the 2016 presidential election look like this: Hillary Clinton got roughly the same number of votes that President Obama received four years ago en route to his reelection, but she nonetheless lost the presidency to Donald Trump, who came in at least 2.7 million votes behind her.

That’s a highly unusual outcome — the biggest gap between the popular vote and the electoral college in almost a century and a half. Only now, with almost all the nation’s ballots counted, have analysts begun to flesh out what led to that result and what implications it has for the nation’s deep political divisions.

Start with California, where Clinton beat Trump by almost 2 to 1, amassing a margin of more than 4.2 million votes. That’s a victory more impressive even than Obama’s in 2012, and it included a win in Orange County, which had sided with the Republican in every presidential election back to 1936.

But Clinton’s huge majority in the nation’s largest state was also part of her key weakness — a base of support too concentrated in the big, urban areas of the northeast and the West Coast.

A candidate gets all of a state’s electoral votes whether she wins by four or 4 million, so in the national picture, the huge size of Clinton’s majority in California, as well as a similarly lopsided margin in New York, did her no good. Clinton piled up similarly ......................................................

The “popular vote” chorus forgets not only that Trump didn’t bother to campaign in those states that are written off as “blue.” Many voters in solidly blue or red states don’t bother to vote because they know the state will go the the D (or R). Perhaps if their votes were fought for, the margins would change substantially.

Thought I learned about the Electoral College in 5th Grade Civics. Weird that they feel a need to explain.

Trump didn't spend nearly as much money.

"Hillary Clinton’s losing campaign cost a record $1.2B"

Clinton spent no time campaigning in Wisconsin, but did campaign in Arizona and Texas. Her campaign may have been the most ineptly run campaign since, well, at least since Mitt Romney's campaign.

Hope they select Robby Mook for DNC chair. Maybe he can do as much for the rest of the Democrat party as he did for Clinton.

If you take away Texas, NY, and CA, Trump won by about 7 million votes.

I agree, I believe the United States was an unequaled experiment on the evolutionary path of mankind and with the right leadership there are no limits to what the US can achieve. I shudder to think what would happen with a progression of the current leadership who derived satisfaction and considered it an achievement sending mixed up genders into female bathrooms, instead of taking pride and push forward towards exploring the heavens. I hope the push in the RIGHT direction under Trump will continue. I hope and pray the powers to be will provide him with wisdom and insight as well as protect him.

You should revel in her torment as she mulls these facts over and over in her head. Her husband never sniffed 50% and won two terms. She no doubt scored the widest popular vote margin not to win the election in our nation’s history. Can you not enjoy the exquisite agony she must still be suffering?

clinton (and the uniparty’s problem) is daunting. they just can’t find a workable way distribute their race based/illegal vote outside of their urban strongholds. redistricting can only spread the cancerous urban vote so far into the countryside. at some point, your jerry-rigged district has to have some thickness and a geographic limit on how long it can be.

I don’t Trump nearly half as much money. I would even say a quarter as much money. She was probably getting ripped off at every turn. Including the 7 million for a 20 minute firework show. My town doesn’t even spend 100k on a 30 minute one.
