Probably not the same site, but it has lots of information at the above site. It goes about things in looking at the “greenhouse effect” of a gas. A pound of methane has a greater effect than a pound of CO2.

Bottom line - the greenhouse effect caused by man is about 0.28% of the total effect.

if the total atmosphere weighs 1.8 billion tons and CO2 is 720 billion tons, is something off here? Did you perhaps have a typo and the total atmosphere is 1.8 trillion tons? Thanks for any clarification you can offer.

You can calculate the weight of the earth’s atmosphere fairly readily:

Atmospheric pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch.

The radius of the earth is about 4000 miles, and the surface area of a sphere is 4 π r²

That works out to 64,000,000π square miles.

There are 5,280 feet in a mile, times 12 inches per foot. Call it 63,000 inches per mile

Square that and you have roughly 3,700,000 square inches in a square mile.

So the surface area of the earth is roughly 64x10⁶x3.7x10⁶π square inches. Call it 256x10¹²π or roughly 900x10¹² square inches.

Weight of the atmosphere, in pounds, would then be 14.7 pounds per square inch , multiplied by 900x10¹² square inches.

Divide by 2000 pounds per ton to get roughly 450 x10⁹

I was pretty casual about rounding the numbers, but I don’t even have to be accurate to one order of magnitude in this case. Looks like on the order of a trillion tons, not a mere billion.
