HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Tsunami Watch has been issued for all Hawaiian islands after a large earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The quake, which struck around 7:38 a.m. HST, measured at a preliminary magnitude of 8.0, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
If tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave would be 2:56 p.m. HST.
Details are limited at this time, but the PTWC is investigating the threat to Hawaii.

Makes sense as that would probably be localized. I believe the fault line there is strike-slip/lateral (think San Andreas) rather than a subduction zone (think Cascadia or off Japan).

Aloha!! They just cancelled the Tsunami warning from 3300 miles away. They must have calculated the wave energy from the available formulas and panicked in embarrassment.

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake
is 15.848 times bigger than
a magnitude 6.8 earthquake,
but it is 63.095 times stronger (energy release).

We were on Maui in 1986 when a tsunami warning was issued. We had to evacuate our hotel taking only our airline tickets and wallets. We sat high up in the sugar cane fields, for hours, while being told that all of the hotels would probably be gone when the tsunami hit. My son thought this was the coolest thing ever. After a few hours the warning was cancelled and we were led back to our hotels. Don’t think we weren’t nervous all night wondering if they were correct.
My 41 year old son still has the t-shirt that reads “I survived the tsunami of 1986”.
My money is on Cthulhu.
