Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, writing in Thursday's New York Times [1], says he has "a few things to say," now that he's leaving the Senate for good.
Reid devoted half of his op-ed to a defense of the Senate rule change he instituted in 2013. The so-called "nuclear option" will allow confirmation of Donald Trump's nominees (except for the Supreme Court) by a simple 51-vote majority. It eliminates the filibuster.
"One thing we fought for thats worth defending is a fairer, more open and more productive Senate," Reid wrote. "We changed the Senate rules to guarantee a presidents nominees a fair, simple-majority vote, and declared that a presidents nominees should not be stymied with procedural hurdles and a requirement for supermajority votes.
"We declared that the changes should apply regardless of which party was in the White House, because fair votes are what democracy is all about. I doubt any of us envisioned Donald J. Trumps becoming the first president to take office under the new rules. But what was fair for President Obama is fair for President Trump."
Reid called the rule change a "victory" for a "functioning, open and transparent Senate."

He must have an extreme fever. Delirious
Only one way he will be gone, gone. Until then, he’ll be pulling katherine mantos strings when she replaces him shortly.
Is he in a coffin as yet?
Also, he is a moron.
Most rickety tick, IMO
The ONLY reason that Reid did not unilaterally abolish Supreme Court filibusters is because there were no vacancies on the Court at the time.
The ONLY reason that Reid did not unilaterally abolish legislative filibusters is because the Republicans controlled the House and could easily block any legislation that Reid pushed through the Senate on a Democrat party line vote.
I just wish that McConnell had any balls and would unilaterally abolish Supreme Court and legislative filibusters now when it would do us some good. It was called the nuclear option for a reason. When the other side unloads their nukes on you the correct response is to unload your nukes on them, not let them rebuild and hope that they won’t do it again.
Watching Harry makes me reconsider my stand on partial birth abortion.
