Well to keep 96 then add 60, it seems there would be a lack of pilots, Sweden being not that populous.
Why Is Sweden Destroying 96 Powerful Fighter Jets That Could Deter Russia?
Probably for the same reason they bring in untold numbers of moooslims. Some people just are just having a difficult time employing common sense what seems to be a worldwide phenomena otherwise we would not had to endure eight years of obozo.
It’s about preserving Sweden’s industrial base. If they do not continually design and manufacture leading edge aircraft (and these are NOT BTW, as they have no stealth), Sweden’s industrial ability to produce aircraft will deteriorate and eventually deteriorate to nil.
There no doubt is a strong secondary market for these high performance aircraft. They can get a good price for what they now have and upgrade relatively inexpensively to the new, more advanced model. Sincerely doubt however that Swedish air force jets will ever see actual combat.
Sweden faces no external threat. if they want to face up to their real threat that 1.8 billion could buy enough S&W Airweight snub 38s to arm a third of the population.
That of course, is to use against the real threat.

STOL cold weather fighter. Without specialized heavy equipment F-16s and F 18s cannot fly a sustained tour in Northern Canada agianst the Russians.
