Rep. John Conyers: ‘The Electoral College Is Rooted in Slavery’

(CNSNews.com) – Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) held a forum Tuesday on the future of the Electoral College, which he claimed was “rooted in slavery.”

“We also must face up to the cold reality that the Electoral College is rooted in slavery,” Conyers said in his opening statement.

Conyers referenced a claim by one of the witnesses, Yale Law professor Akhil Amar, that “states opposed direct elections for the president, because in a direct election system, the North would outnumber the South, whose many slaves could not vote, but the Electoral College instead let each southern state count its slaves, although with a two-fifths discount, they counted for three-fifths of a person in computing its share of the overall count.”

By that warped logic, the House of Representatives is also “rooted in slavery”. So when is he going to resign?

..and that would include Conyers, a low information congressman.

Says a lot about those who continue to vote for him.

Every college/university has a course called Critical Theory which is exactly for that. How to criticize white/Christian/capitalism/America
Then if you really want to be an expert, you can take “studies”, African American studies, Women’s studies. Pretty much everything but heterosexual white guy studies.

It was that same USSC institution that John values so much to kill babies and create marital anarchy that decided blacks were only 3/5 a person. And of course if John is honest, he would admit that his very own party is the same party of slavery.

So yes, John must agree that they were only at least 3/5 human. Sounds hypocritical, does it not?

EV works fine and this election proved beyond any shadow of doubt as to why we can be grateful it is in place.

At the time of the U.S. Constitution, most of the country had slavery.

As a result of this gradualist approach, New York did not fully free its last ex-slaves until 1827, Rhode Island had seven slaves still listed in the 1840 census. Pennsylvania's last ex-slaves were freed in 1847, Connecticut's in 1848, and New Hampshire and New Jersey in 1865.

BTW, states with the most slaves wanted them to count as a whole person (not 3/5's), just as non-voting women and children did for purposes of representation. The northerners (with fewer slaves at the time) wanted slaves to count for ZERO. They settled on 3/5's.

Lots of horse-trading here, but it would be more accurate to characterize it as an agrarian versus trade dispute rather than slave versus non-slave.

Conyers is one of those SIXholes who thinks everything he doesn’t like is “rooted in slavery.”

Levin played the audio of this guy on yesterday’s show. Sounded like Conyers was under the influence or just showing his age. He has no business being in the Congress.

In related news, Conyers claimed that God has discriminated against reptiles because there are now less flying reptiles than birds. And it’s Trump’s fault.

As the truism goes; “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts.” If these proponents are literate, I commend them to read “The Federalist Papers” and in particular #68 (attributed to Alexander Hamilton) as well as the “Big State/Small State” discussions from the ratification process.

In this case, for Rep. Conyer’s edification, Virginia was one of the Big States (population), along with Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York. So of the slave-holding states, only 1 of 4 was in that camp and then 5 (GA, SC, NC, MD and DE) in the Small State class. (Delaware was not locked in with the slave agriculture but it was still permitted and had a definite population of slaves.)
