Jeep Fans? I am Thinking of Buying a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

Jeep Fans?

Freeper Husbands!

I am Thinking of Buying a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. I like the vehicle, it is big for me, I am moving from my Golf Diesel. Although I have had Xterras and Mazda MPV (Before they ruined its design) previously.

I looked at many new cars and SUV crosses and they all are poorly designed, have lousy visibility and have metal that is so thin it needs to be serviced every few months. I also discovered I need a more butch looking vehicle. All the Suv crossovers look like they were made for Oprah. Teardrop shapes and curves.

I liked the used Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. It looks durable, I have found a couple of them. Seems as though I am having a difficult time getting the price down below 30K

I cannot quite figure out the Jeep Wrangler choices. Is there a Jeep Wrangler as high and tall as the unlimited but only with 2 doors? All the Wranglers I see with 2 doors are short and look like they belong in a suburb.

Any advice from Freeper Jeep owners appreciated.

Am I making another dumb move here?

Agreed!! 4 Jeeps and then my FJ. I’m holding on to it until they’re reintroduced (wishful thinking?) and then I’ll trade into a new one.

Jeep frames rust out and crack.

Mechanically injected diesel like my 1985 jetta. That would work. Also, calsium carbide can be a lot of fun to play with!

I have a ‘96 Sidekick with 82k. It was towed around for the first 25k of it’s life. I like it, do mild offroad (compared to the built Jeeps), has 5 speed, rare AC, top rack, not for sale. Only unscheduled repair was the little $5 cam seal which we did at the same time as the timing belt. Incidentally, its short wheelbase lets me tow my boat/trailer across the backyard and onto a parking pad. Can’t manage it with the pickup.

I had a Samurai also (bought new for a few dollars during the C/R scare) and liked it also although the 68 mph top speed was kind of limiting on the highway. Fine for around town. A crosswind did have it up on two wheels once coming across a Cascades pass - exciting!!!

Jeep has the worst consumer rating for a reason: They have quality problems.

We moved away from Chrysler products. I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee two years ago. Ditched it this past May. It was terrible and dangerous. Bought a BMW X3. Couldn’t be happier.

BTW, the Jeep Wrangler two door is the basic original Jeep. The Unlimited is the four door abomination.

My Dad had a Flying A Gas Station in Altadena CA in the 60’s.

One of his Customers got to drive one of the Turbine Cars for a few Months. He took my Dad for a spin in it.

He thought it was pretty cool.

Gotta love "camping out" when driving to go with something like that. loots of capability (even with relatively low ratings) that only a fool would try to use (see some of the "Funniest Videos" for reference.

Lots of capable 4/AWD vehicles out there that also provide some comfort and even gas mileage.

Just my aging bones 2 cents worth.

Perhaps you are too picky to own such a vehicle

"Probably don’t know 4wd from a bathtub plug."

My sail boat has some plugs but, I haven't had to use them. You're right though, my idea of fun is out of sight of land.

The only real difference in Jeeps is that there is a 2 door and the 4 door. The four-door is referred to as the unlimited. Then you get into various different models. The only one that really counts is the Rubicon it has the 410 gear ratios and Lockers in an automatic sway bar disconnect. So if you’re ever going to go off-roading I suggest getting a Rubicon it’s well worth the extra money.

Jeep is the real 4wd. Why would she want to buy a vehicle that’s been discontinued? FJ stands for “Fake Jeep”

Uh, what?

I've owned crossover SUVs for the past 5 years or so. never had to have the metal "serviced."

What makes you think the Jeep has thicker metal? Are you talking about the body or the frame?

Right, you are fortunate enough to own a five year old car. The showroom models are atrocious. I am even reading that the old standards of Toyota and Subaru have been compromised by new EPA standards. That is why I am looking at a 2 to 5 year old Jeep.

Beware, it is not your father’s Wrangler. Reliability is questionable and the trails around here eat them for lunch.

Until recently, virtually all diesels were totally mechanical-only units....until the green weenies, the EPA and horn-rimmed techogeeks came in and frigged it all up.

Now, just like everything else, they are over-engineered pieces of electronic crap that don’t work as well.

On gas vehicles, I’m just fine with EFI and electronic coil-pack ignition....BUT YOU CAN STOP RIGHT THERE!

Modern cars are so full of electronic overkill, that they are basically unrepairable. ABS, TPMS, PCMs etc etc etc....ALL JUNK!

A modern car’s electronics may work just fine in the laboratory, but out in the real world of -20F to +120F and even higher underhood temps, constant vibration, road salt and heavy rain....Fogetaboutdit!

Actually I got a new one in April. Not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the sheet metal for the body, or what?

Here’s my opinion. I drive AWD vehicles for use when it snows, or other situations where traction is questionable. I don’t go off-roading on trails.

The Wrangler, as others have told you, is designed for off-road capability. It is truly unique. A class by itself.

But if what you’re looking for is something to ride on the road and handle the snow, a modern AWD system would be better than the true 4 wheel drive that the Wrangler has.

If you come around a bend and there is a patch of ice, my AWD vehicle will sense the wheel slipping and apply power to the rear wheels.

The Wrangler, if you are driving in 2WD mode will stay in 2WD unless you can quickly shift it into 4WD. Which isn’t going to happen in time to prevent the slide.

And with the true 4WD, you can’t leave it in 4WD mode while driving on flat, dry pavement. You’ll damage the system components.
