China urges U.S. to block transit by Taiwan president

BEIJING/GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - China called on the United States on Tuesday not to let Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen transit there when she visits Guatemala next month, days after President-elect Donald Trump irked Beijing by speaking to Tsai in a break with decades of precedent.

China is deeply suspicious of Tsai, whom it thinks wants to push for the formal independence of Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing regards as a renegade province.

Her call with Trump on Friday was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president with a Taiwanese leader since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition to China from Taiwan in 1979.

Tsai is due to visit Guatemala, one of its small band of diplomatic allies, on Jan. 11-12, its Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales told Reuters. He gave no details on what President Jimmy Morales and Tsai would discuss.

Taiwan's Liberty Times, considered close to Tsai's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, reported on Monday that she was planning to transit in New York early next month on her way to visit Central American allies Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Taiwan has not formally confirmed Tsai's trip, but visits to its allies in the region are normally combined with transit stops in the United States and meetings with Taiwan-friendly officials.

Asked about the possibility of a Tsai stopover in the United States, China's Foreign Ministry said the "one China" principle, which states Taiwan is part of China, was commonly recognized by the international community.

"As for the issue you raise of a 'transit' in the United States by the leader of the Taiwan region, her real aim is self-evident," the ministry said in a statement sent to Reuters.

China hopes the United States "does not allow her transit, and does not send any wrong signals to 'Taiwan independence'

No one stops the Chinese from welcoming dictators, with appalling human rights abuses, from visiting the mainland. None of the Chinese business who the United States of America permit transit and visit the American Homeland.

Slap a 10% tariff on all their crap and see if that gets their attention. Apply all the revenue to the wall and rebuilding the military.

Taiwan has been independent for 70 years. Neither they nor the Chinese want to admit it, but it is plain for anyone to see.

I’m not sure its always in our interest to play along.

Especially, if we are in tough negotiations with China on a whole list of subjects including their military restiveness, I don’t know why its a good idea to preemptively surrender on every issue including giving our back to an ally. It hasn’t worked so far.

But, at the same time, they have been drawing closer together economically. The Chinese have a major-ego issue about controlling Taiwan. But, they should be patient. A war to conquer it won't do anyone any good.

If Americans would boycott buying ANYTHING "Made in China" for even one hour their welcome mat for dictators would fold within seconds.

But that won't stop anymore than the illegal Mexicans ALWAYS finding work here as gardeners and nannies.

$$$$$$$$$ "trumps" everything.

Can someone send me a link to whatever information may be relevant regarding the history on the verifications of free and open elections/campaigns and ballot privacy protections in Red China?

Or are their elections like this in 1995 Iraq when the election officials reported that one candidate got 99.96% of the vote on 99.47% turnout? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy3eAC0bjnI

I accept both the 10% tariff and rebuilding the military.

However, the wall will fail BECAUSE there are ALREADY hundreds of TUNNELS under the "Line."
What would work to stop the illegals is AMERICANS NOT HIRING illegals for construction work, gardeners and nannies.
The good ole "Yanqui" dollar rules.

No jobs here for them = no illegals.
Amazing how fast that would do it.

Unless she’s on a no-fly list , I see no legal reason the pm of Tauwan should be denied aviation freedom throught the U.S. enroute to Guatemala

Have we ever successfully gotten China to turn down air transit of genocidal north korean tyrants or iranian nuclear scientists?

Only in a country run by a wimpy guy like Barack Obama would the ChiComs have the nerve to tell us whom we should meet, see or speak to.

If Obama had any gonads he would tell the ChiComs to mind their damned business and stay out of ours.

But the Chinese know what we all know and that Obama is a wimp in a nice suit.
