Forget all the claims of "low" unemployment rate. This is the actual workforce participation rate from the last two Bush years on thru the Obama years from the BLS. It isn't pretty.

A decline of 4%? That’s it? I would have thought it was much more worse than that.

Always be suspect of BLS data and the intercept points they select. There’s almost always a reason why they select the vertical intercept. Go back to the late 1990’s and it was over 67% for all groups. Breaking it out by age is even more interesting.

econjack. You win the Economics spelling bee. Now let’s get the “L” out of here so these “economists” can go on thinking that their BS degree doesn’t mean something else.

Anyone who shops knows we’ve been lied to about inflation and anyone who pays attention knows that they really cooked the books on how they figure both inflation and unemployment to make them both “look good on paper”.

That’s actually more like a 6% decline in those holding or looking for a job.

Try more like 9.30% U 6 is the true rate. U6 Unemployment Rate http://www.macrotrends.net/1377/u6-unemployment-rate

What brings the current numbers up are the Temp. Christmas hires, mostly PT workers, who will be laid off late Jan when all the major returns are done. Even fast food places are hiring more help just for Christmas help and they will be gone late Jan.

What has to now be factored in is the UE from Gatlinburg, TN and the businesses that burned. Or the temp construction workers that will be hired to rebuild those that are going to rebuild. Many lost businesses and homes, some just jobs who won’t have a job to return to.

Many shifted to SSDI as depressed, a bad back, mental health issues, anything to get that cash coming in with Medicaid and utility discounts.
Others are working under the table, following the example of illegal immigrants to join the informal economy.

Trump better switch to using U6 because the U3 goes up as the economy gets better and people not looking now try to get back into the job market. The Lib MSM will say Trump policy is failing while REAL jobs go up because U3 doesn’t show that.

U6 figures will show people out of the market getting back to work and the U6 will go down.
