Pat McCrory concedes NC governor race
Hotair ^ | 12/05/2016 | Ed Morrissey

Republicans had a great night at every level in last month’s elections, but not everyone went home a winner. Governor Pat McCrory trailed in his re-election bid but refused to concede the election, requesting a recount and alleging irregularities in the voting, especially in Durham County. Today McCrory surrendered to the inevitable, and promised to help governor-elect Roy Cooper successfully and quickly transition into the office:

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory conceded the governor’s race Monday, clearing the way for Democrat Roy Cooper to be declared the winner nearly four weeks after Election Day.

The win by Cooper, the state’s outgoing attorney general, gives Democrats an important consolation prize after a disappointing election across the country. However, Republicans retain super majorities in both legislative chambers.

In a video message from his office posted to YouTube, McCrory said, “Despite continued questions that should be answered regarding the voting process, I personally believe that the majority of our citizens have spoken, and we now should do everything we can to support the 75th governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper.”

In a way, the controversy in North Carolina resembles that of Jill Stein’s recount demands in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. For that matter, so does McCrory’s reasoning behind contesting the results — supposed concerns about integrity in the ballot-counting system. There’s one major exception, though, which is that a recount would at least theoretically impact McCrory’s status in the election. He was the runner-up, not a fourth-place fringe candidate for whom a recount would make no difference at all.

However, the numbers made McCrory’s efforts nothing short of quixotic. The state cast around 4.7 million votes and McCrory trails by 10,263, according to the state Board of Elections unofficial tally. That’s a 0.218% difference, but it’s about ten times the amount that a recall would likely change. That’s almost the same difference as Michigan in the presidential race, which was ordered to begin its recount today by a federal judge, where an outcome-changing difference is equally improbable.

McCrory belatedly realized that this was going nowhere, and took the responsible action of admitting to reality and allowing the state of North Carolina to get back to business with a minimum of disruption. Too bad that Jill Stein, who has much less rational standing for her demands, doesn’t have the same sense of civic responsibility.

Addendum: As the Associated Press notes, Cooper’s not going to have an easy time as McCrory’s successor. Republicans have a supermajority in the state legislature, which means that they can govern without Cooper’s approval on issues that unite them. Republicans lost the seat, which isn’t nothing, but they haven’t yet lost the state.

RE: This great state will be BLUE through-and-through before I die.

Can you explain to us what factors account for this happening?

That a pro baby killing, pro queer “marriage”, ObamaCare-loving, ass who wants to allow men in female bathrooms, was elected governor over any republican is enough to make me never want to go back to my home state. I’m ashamed of what the state has became due to the liberals in and around Charlotte and the Triangle Area. The great Jesse Helms is rolling over in his grave.

IMO, it is the migration of liberals --those who got fed up with the cesspools their own policies created in their native states-- and who now seek Mayberry in NC.

Trouble is, the minute they get here (from NY, CA, FL) they start right in: "Hello, 911 Emergency? My neighbor just fired a rifle!" "Hello, Animal Control? Dogs are running loose up and down MY street!" "Hello, Sheriff's Dept.? My neighbor is flying CONFEDERATE FLAGS on his pickup truck! AND he has a gun rack in the rear window!"

I hope you get my point. These people come here seeking the very freedom and tranquility they willingly/deliberately legislated away in their own states and when they get a glimpse of what FREE TO BE YOU AND ME actually looks like, they go right back to 'tattling' like little kids and demanding that the Nanny State make it all better.

So, yeah, now that we've got a lib-dem governor they'll turn NC into CA or NY within 10 years. :(

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

It’s the duty of every Republican in office in NC to make Coooper’s life a living hell. Make him regret the day he was born let alone decided to run for Governor. Investigate it every time he so much as breaks wind. Find something to impeach him on if you can.

It obviously was fraud.

Super hackers have been known to find such things.

I sent them an email to say I hoped they were contacting Reddit/x-chan super sleuths in this.

I wonder if anyone ever read it — or heard of their super work.

At the state level in North Carolina, Republicans have swept away the democrats as they die off... you know those white’s the DNC heralds the death of!

I am glad he lost. He had the audacity to lie to my face about a local matter that he didn’t need to lie about.

The reason NC is changing is due in part to the tech boom in the triangle area. Kids who would have come to school at UNC/NCSU/Duke and went away after school now stay in the region to work at one of the tech powerhouses located in Raleigh

Downtown Raleigh is completely changing thanks to the tech companies.

You would think that once the libs leave a blue state for a red they honor the old saying that “when in Rome do as the Romans do.” Which all means leave your lib that at the curb of your former home.

Only people who respect others are capable of such graciousness. Most (not all) libs' default behavior is self-centered and often downright rude, imo.

Was behind a new arrival in a check-out line at Rite Aid last year. The clerk politely said, "Here's your receipt and change, Ma'am."

The newbie snatched her change and announced haughtily, "I'm not a 'Ma'am'!" before stalking out of the store.

Jaws dropped as we watched her go. Then one gentleman started to laugh and pretty soon we were all howling.

But it's no joke that these arrogant interlopers are devoid of basic manners and truly do believe they're smarter than everybody else.

I pray to God each night that those creatures will never get the upper hand here.

Rudeness is bad regardless of the state one lives or its politics. To bad you were subjected to that a few weeks ago. Ipray as well that the Trump White House will make good manners in again.

He lost due to his support of a toll road that goes through the very base that elected him

Thanks for the information, I had not seen that elsewhere. Was wondering why a mostly red state would elect a pro-abort / transgender bathroom zealot.

Guess it corroborates the old saying attributed to Tip O'Neill: "All politics is local."

Sounds like a good deal for my Sox. I agree with the GM, they need to rebuild.

But it still sucks to see Sale go.

Best ERA ever against the Yankees, perfect move for Boston.

Third base is perrenial black hole for the White Sox.

Todd Frazier hit 40 home runs last year, but batted .225, on base .302

“plus others”

Kopech better be more than a “plus other”! Or I’ll hold YOU personally responsible! Doesn’t he throw 200 mph?
