Social Security to take disabled woman’s money after fund-raiser sends her to a baseball game
Q13Fox | 12/5/16 | Tribune Media

One Kansas City Royals fan feels like she is being punished for the good deed of others.

Joyce Jeter has a debilitating medical condition, causing her to rely on Social Security as her only source of income. Royals fans rallied around her to raise money to send her to a game at Kauffman Stadium, but now that gift is leaving her financial future in jeopardy.

Joyce told Fox4KC she feels like she's being robbed all because she accepted a gift.

A gift like that is income. You have to pay taxes on the worth.

It all depends. Most people do it under the table. You're allowed to give up to $28,000 a year from a couple, or $14,000 from a person as a gift without reporting it. This is in the IRS rules. It does not have to be reported.

By under the table, I mean if you have the means then treat someone to dinner, or buy their groceries, gas or clothing/furniture for them. That can't be tracked and is allowable.

I just don't understand Social Security going after this poor woman. A politician needs to intercede on her behalf, and rein in overzealous agents.

Private York was a religious WW1 war hero.

After his return to the US and ensuing fame, he declined lucrative speaking engagements and movie roles, saying he didn’t feel right commercializing his military service —he just wanted to hunt and teach kids.

After he was bed-ridden and BLIND, the IRS stated York had used the wrong formula for calculating taxes and that he owed $150,000 in 1960 dollars, beggaring the bed-ridden man.

Too many people don’t know the difference between S.S.I. and S.S.D.I.

They should be going after fakers who scam Social Security Disability when they are actually able bodied.

My sister-in-law's husband got Social Security Disability, claiming a bad back. Was in his very early 50's. He was simply lazy and worthless. Would often pick up heavy TV sets going up and down stairs, and other items to sell at flea markets. He scammed the system for years, until he died last year from suicide.

I agree. It’s not a contest she won. This is a gift.

I’m thinking someone got jealous, perhaps one of the name callers in the article.

They filed a complaint and the SSDI didn’t do a thorough investigation.

This offer by kind members of the public should not change someone’s status like this.

I don’t want to see SSDI abused, but this is clearly and instance where an exception could be made.

Condemning someone to a miserable life just because they have health problems and need SSDI, isn’t something we as a nation need to do.

All the abuses out there, and this is where they focus?

FAIL!

I guess they should have just handed her the ticket instead of giving her the money. I mean, if a poor disabled person goes on a date with a rich person who pays for the tickets, the poor person isn’t obligated to call that income.

She seems smart, quite capable on the internet. Not every job requires a pretty face. Maybe people who feel for her should help her find a job.

Mean spirited of me? Maybe. But the reality is that SSI is growing faster than we can afford. Why should I work when I can make just as much on SSI?

I remember several women in my church in the 50s who had amputations, had “goiters” and other “disabilities”. They worked, often in small local family owned busnesses. Cashier at a gas station was the one I knew the best.

This was a winning, not a gift from a person.

#25 I got a better one. A man that I worked with claimed he had a chronic back problem then claimed he fell in his bathtub.

He bought short term disability coverage thru our employer. He ended up getting a couple of years bilking the system along with SSDI. The short term provider cut him off after (get this) a news station ran a story of him Scuba diving and some bizarre fish identified.

Still sucking SSDI however.

Scuba diving ain't too bad on the back. Could be said is therapy! However, the brother-in-law I mentioned was a scammer all the way around. He married my wife's sister, almost 20 years her junior, and got her to cover him on medical and half her pension when she retired. We thought she would end up dead in a swamp (they're in Tennessee), but she probably nagged him and outlived him. He killed himself last year and surprised all of us that she outlived him.

thanks. it took awhile to find a more robust the back story.

She was given a world series ticket.
It appears she used the go fund me money for season tickets and a donation.

There are way more people scamming the SSDI system with way more issues than just that.

A gift like that is income. You have to pay taxes on the worth.

She did nothing in exchange for the gift, nor was there barter involved. Goods/services were not exchanged for this money. Someone else created a Go-Fund-Me account to raise the money for her to go, and raised the money there, all by gifts from others. It's not taxable per IRS rules.

#34 It wasn’t the scuba diving that got him. It was footage of him carrying all his gear including his tank out of his vehicle to 100 yards away to the waters edge.
