Russian Su-33 crashed in the Mediterranean while attempting to land on Kuznetsov aircraft carrier
The Aviationist ^ | December 5, 2016 | David Cenciotti

Less than three weeks after losing a MiG-29, it looks like the Russian Navy has lost another aircraft during Admiral Kuznetsov operations: a Su-33 Flanker.

Military sources close to The Aviationist report that a Russian Navy Su-33 Flanker carrier-based multirole aircraft has crashed during flight operations from Admiral Kuznetsov on Saturday, Dec. 3.

According to the report, the combat plane crashed at its second attempt to land on the aircraft carrier in good weather conditions (visibility +10 kilometers, Sea State 4, wind at 12 knots): it seems that it missed the wires and failed to go around falling short of the bow of the warship.

Years ago the Tactical Air Command (TAC) published a flight safety magazine, “TacAttack.” On the last page was listed various safety statistics, number of ground accidents, fatalities, injuries, etc. Also listed was “Number of ejections” followed by “Number of successful ejections.” Very often they were not the same number.

Must be harder than it looks.

It is, and this is what distinguishes the US Navy (and the entire US Military), the level of expertise, precision, training, and dicipline, none finer in the world.

But even we have failures that cost US equipment and sometimes, lives, it comes with the job.

I believe it burns coal, or maybe wood.

They use captured Muslims for fuel.

The bungee embargo really hurt their carrier readiness.

Exactly, and that was my only point. An ejection is “safe” only to the extent it is often much less unsafe that staying in the aircraft. Rapidly removing yourself from a flying (however shortly or poorly) jet aircraft via explosive charges and a rocket is not something I would ever consider “safe”.

There are a few steam turbine powered ore carriers in the Great Lakes running N6. Stacks are a lot cleaner than the Rooski”s.

The bungee embargo really hurt their carrier readiness.

It appears that it has really pissed off the Russian women, but not slowed them down.

Elena Kazachenko defying the bungee embargo, she also ejected safely.

Our Navy burned the equivalent of #6 (NSFO) for decades. All it takes is to maintain proper combustion air to fuel ratio, and you have what we used to call “Economy Haze”. The Russian carrier has pressure fired boilers. From the amount of smoke she billows, my guess is that the Ruskies are having big problems in keeping the superchargers working properly. If that is the case, she would make smoke even if she burned DFM.

There’s a little less than two million gallons still aboard the Arizona, or so I was told.
When we visited Pearl five years ago, I caught a whiff of the droplets coming up from the reck as we approached the memorial.
The ore carrier fleet on the Great Lakes converted to N2 as of the beginning of 2015, with certain exceptions, including a couple of boats equipped with scrubbers..

Safe ejection? Not really, but it beats the heck out of a Fatal Crash.

Ha, they’d better catch some that can improve their landings on the aircraft carrier then.

Is there really such a thing as a safe ejection?

Not being sarcastic but the Russian is supposed to make one of the best ejection systems around

“We lost two due to cables snapping...one in December 2015 and March 2016.”

I thought our guys landed at full power so they could go get back up in case of cable miss/failure.
