Far-right concedes defeat in Austrian presidential election – live
The Guardian ^ | December 4, 2016

The far-right Austrian presidential candidate Norbert Hofer’s campaign manager, Herbert Kickl, has conceded his candidate’s defeat to former Greens leader Alexander Van der Bellen, Reuters reports.

Kickl told the state broadcaster:

The bottom line is it didn’t quite work out. In this case the establishment - which pitched in once again to block, to stonewall and to prevent renewal - has won.

Also:

If confirmed, the margin of Van der Bellen’s forecast win over Hofer in Austria is a major surprise.

Polls in the run-up to the vote had the two candidates neck-and-neck, with several putting the far-right Freedom party’s Hofer ahead. But the first official results, released minutes ago, show the independent with 53.5% of the vote, with Hofer 46.4%.

Interior ministry officials have told the Associated Press that votes obviously continue to be counted and the percentages are therefore almost certain to vary, but the outcome is now unlikely to change.

POLLS ARE DISINFORMATIONAL BS ......

Never believe a Poll as they are never true in my opinion and experience.

Get out and VOTE even if polls show your side is winning by 75%.

This is what will happen in France too.

They dropped the voting age to 16 to help seal a win.

He really won, and then they had to recount to do fraud. Then they postpone the reelection because they didn’t like the date coinciding with Hungary’s vote.

There were concerns about the use of postal ballots (absentee ballots) in the two earlier runoff elections this year with the Freedom Party getting a court ruling to run the runoff a second time over questionable ballots in the first runoff and the second scheduled runoff election cancelled when the postal ballot irregularities were detected.

You can smell something here.....

The one thing in France’s favor, for throwing off the declining establishment, is that France has suffered much more from the leftist sclerosis - more dramatic and visible failures - than a small country like Austria has. You may be right, but France is much more on edge now.

Anyone resisting Muslim Sharia takeover is “far right” — Leftards in the media and politics are lemmings with a death wish.

Greens are hardly “establishment” by US standards. For one thing, the party is only 30 years old. Good on Austria for making the right choice in the end.

>Notice the good form. Let’s come together as a nation. No recount. No cry baby.

Dear friends,

I would like to thank you. You have given me such great support, and I am incredibly sad that it didn’t work out. I would have liked to watch over our Austria.

I congratulate Alexander Van der Bellen on his success and ask all Austrians to stick together and to work together. We are all, equally, Austrians, no matter how we voted at the ballot box.

Norbert Hofer

>Don’t be too surprised if Hofer’s party finishes first in the next parliamentary election, and he is able to put together a ruling coalition.

>Regarding what is “far right” in Europe: The New Dawn Party of Greece is a far right, neo-Nazi party. The National Democratic Party of Germany is far right, but actually not a neo-Nazi Party.

>A bunch of parties are called “far-right” by the establishment-conservatives and socialists, but hey are simply a bit more nationalistic/euroskeptic than the establishment conservatives. They are just as committed to democracy, free markets and personal liberty as are the establishment conservatives (maybe more so). They want free trade and investment, but generally oppose a common currency, excess regulation by EUROcrats, and free immigration of people who do not embrace our values of freedom and democracy.

Soft-Euroskeptic: UK Conservative Party, Polish Law & Justice Party, German Alternative Party

Hard-Euroskeptic: UK Independence Party (Nigel Farage), National Front (Marine Le Pen), Austrian Freedom Party, Dutch Freedom Party
