Congress authorizes Trump to arm Syrian rebels with anti-aircraft missiles (McCain)

Congress authorizes Trump to arm Syrian rebels with anti-aircraft missiles

The House voted for the first time today to explicitly authorize the incoming Donald Trump administration to arm vetted Syrian rebels with anti-aircraft missiles.

Summary Today, the House passed a defense bill that conditionally allows the provision of MANPADs to anti-Syrian regime forces.

Author Julian Pecquet Posted December 2, 2016

While the language in the annual defense bill also creates restrictions on the provision of the controversial weapons, it represents a win for Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., a fervent advocate of helping the rebels resist President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies. The Senate is expected to pass the bill next week.

Until now, the transfer of man-portable air-defense systems, or MANPADs, had been implicitly authorized in the absence of an outright ban. Critics, however, view the new provision as tantamount to a policy recommendation for the president-elect.

"I'm more afraid of Congress on this issue than I am of Trump,” said Robert Naiman, the policy director at Just Foreign Policy, a liberal advocacy group that lobbied for a ban. “I think Congress is trying to tie Trump's hands against making a realistic deal with Russia to end the Syrian civil war. And they are trying to pressure him in the direction of not doing that," he told Al-Monitor.

Mattis is well known in military and foreign policy circles for his aggressive determination to take on America’s foes, notably Iran, including in Syria and Iraq. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee as far back as January 2015, however, he opined that the time for supporting moderate rebel fighters against Assad's forces had "passed."

This shows how many Congressmen and Senators are owned by the Saudis.

I agree they (Neocons, Saudis, Qataris etc. etc.) will never give up.

The only question is will Donald Trump and those he appoints be in alignment with business as usual or move things in a different direction.

The people McCain wants to give weapons to are the “midwives” of Islamic State.

Trump is committed to the destruction of IS. I would not be giving weapons to these people as part of that policy.

They will end up in the wrong hands.

Your comment avoide the truth of the matter. The Saudi’s and the GCC nations are American allies

A country that openly engages in a military campaign to topple the government of another sovereign nation has nothing to complain about when the World Trade Center collapses in a cloud of dust.

The Saudis and Gulf states want a pipeline through Syria.
There are no American interests in Syria.
The only reason we are involved is to do the Saudis bidding.

“They won’t outlast it. Trump has been put in the White House to destroy this cabal. Watch for us to have an alliance with Russia in the next year.”

If you look at the appropriations, the one that interested me is Israel’s particle laser research.

Trump is going to negotiate a deal with Assad and Putin.

No we won’t! Voter fraud will be virtually eliminated and the creation of a job rich economy will create more voters for the new status quo. You do not understand the ruthlessness of the new order like I do. They are going to go after these people with a vengeance.

Exactly and another thing to note is that during our absence on the world stage Israel has been under the protective wing of Russia. While we were funding ISIS the rest of the region Israel, Egypt and Syria and Russia have been partnering together. No we join with them and its now bye-bye ISIS and everyone else who sponsors them.

.........when are we going to learn?

these gdm’s (genetically deviated mis-breds) have been fighting and killing each other for 2,000 years plus. It is pure arrogance or stupidity or both for American’s to think they can give one side or the other and effect the long term outcome because there will never be an “outcome”!

2,000 years from now, they will still be killing each other.

“The Saudi’s and the GCC nations are American allies”

Well, Hillary, Ryan, Jeb and the hundreds of Senators and Congressmen that they’ve made very wealthy will certainly agree with you. Others looking at the Wahhabi movement and promotion of Sharia Law in the West will have a significantly different perspective about the loyalties of these states.

You have picked up a difficult mantle attempting to convince folks that these states are truly allies. However, the Bushes would certainly agree.

Don't do it, President Trump! Let the people of Syria deal with their rulers themselves. It's long past time to get out of the regime change business and end the cycle of war after war. There is no compelling US national security interest in Syria.

If Syria asks for help against ISIS then let's help them. Other than that, forget about it. ISIS doesn't have an air force, so no need to sell the "rebels" anti-aircraft missiles.
